Things to do

The best place to be on sunny days is Tsilivi Beach. This Blue Flag award-winning beach is perfect for sun worshippers; you can work on your tan on the golden sands, splash about in the water, or even try some water sports like banana boating or water skiing. A boat trip to Turtle Island (Marathonisi) is a must on any holidays to Tsilivi. Here you may be lucky enough to spot endangered loggerhead turtles, who come to the island to nest. Or why not hop aboard a boat to Smugglers Cove, where you can see a famous shipwreck from the 1980s? Kids of all ages will love the thrilling slides at Tsilivi Water Park, and there’s even crazy golf in the town centre. When the sun sets, you’ll find plenty of cosy tavernas and restaurants on the waterfront, as well as some lively bars and clubs open until late. Families: A small and sedate resort, there are plenty of things to do in Tsilivi, particularly if you’re travelling with children. The beach has achieved coveted Blue Flag status in recognition of its cleanliness, and the shore shelves gently into the sea, making it ideal for those with younger kids.

Couples: With Tsilivi Beach offering 2km of golden sands, you don’t need much else from your holiday. However, the resort has a thriving nightlife for those who want a special night out. Towards the beach you’ll find some superb restaurants, with the odd beach bar or two offering cool cocktails and good music. Head towards the centre of the resort and you’ll find a good selection of bars, which open in the early evening and keep the good times rolling until the wee, small hours.

Adventurous spirits: There are plenty of water sports on offer, including water-skiing and kite-surfing. If you’re something of a speed-freak, there’s the opportunity to hire a speedboat and zip across the ocean to explore the caves that litter the shoreline. Those who prefer land-locked larks can hop aboard a quad-bike and take a tour up the mountain passes.

Language: Greek is the language most widely-spoken in the resort. However, most of the locals have a good command of English and you should be able to get by. Pack a phrase book or learn some basic pleasantries, just to show willing.

    • Getting around Tsilivi

    By Bus: The bus service in the resort is regular and reliable. You’ll find bus stops along almost every street, allowing you to see most of the town or to travel further afield, to destinations, such as Zante. The service doesn’t run late into the night and tends to close down by about 7pm. If you want to travel after that time, your best bet is to take a taxi.

    By taxi: Taxis are plentiful in the resort and can be hailed from the roadside or booked in advance. It’s always worth checking how much the fare will be before you get in; as it can save arguments once you’ve got to where you’re going.

    By bicycle: With some beautiful mountain trails and some pedestrianised town areas, bicycles are a versatile form of transport. You’ll find plenty of bicycle-hire outlets in the town, close to the seafront.

    Events in Tsilivi

    Feast of the Assumption of Mary: Book your holidays to Tsilivi in August and you might be in time for one of the island’s most significant celebrations, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The whole town gets involved and the streets are filled with street-food vendors, live music, and traditional dancing.

    Zante Wine Festival: Book your Tsilivi holiday in late August or early September and catch the Zante Wine Festival. Greece does produce a range of excellent wines, many of which can be sampled at this celebration. Zante is a mere 10-minute-drive from the resort and the festival is celebrated in Keri Square. The sampling starts at around 8am and goes on until late at night, with plenty of traditional Greek music and sumptuous street food on offer.

    Summer feast: The festival in honour of Zante’s patron saint, Agios Dionysios includes a religious procession that is very important to the island’s residents, followed by three days of feasting, celebrations, and music. Taking place in August, this is a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture.

    This part of Zakynthos enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool winters and hot, dry summers. During the peak months between July and August, the temperature climbs into the high 20s°C, offering the perfect conditions for relaxing on Tsilivi Beach. The shoulder weeks between May and June and September and October are a little cooler, peaking in the low 20s and offer an excellent climate for sightseeing. December and January are the coolest months, with the temperature hovering around the early teens and these are the months in which you can expect some rainfall.
