Egypt and Cape Verde are your hottest choices for early winter sun without going long-haul. Turkey is beach-hot earlier in October; the Canaries are more reliable later. Madeira is cooler, so it’s better for walking and sightseeing.
💛 Going at half term? Look for waterslides, kids’ clubs and plenty of food choices.
💛 Want a quieter trip? Avoid half term. Turkey and Madeira calm down after summer, while the Canaries’ winter sun season begins.
For many families, half term means travelling in the final week of October. Before booking an October half-term holiday, check:
Heated pool – Is it heated on your dates?
Sea entry – Can children walk in from the sand?
Sea safety – Are there lifeguards and sheltered water?
Facilities – Will the slides, kids’ club and entertainment still run?
Wet-weather backup – Is there an indoor pool, play area or town nearby?
See our October weather page for more information.
Egypt feels hotter. Sharm El Sheikh averages around 31°C, with dry heat and snorkeling close to shore. Cape Verde reaches 28–29°C and feels more humid and the sea can be rough. October is the end of its rainy season, although showers tend to be short.
The sea is warm in both: around 27°C in Egypt and 26°C in Cape Verde.
💛 Egypt is the better bet for swimming – if you choose the right bay. The Red Sea is generally calmer than Cape Verde’s Atlantic coast, but not every hotel has a sandy beach. A ‘private beach’ doesn’t always mean you can walk into the sea. At some Sharm hotels, you enter deep water from a jetty, leaving nowhere for children to paddle. Try Naama Bay or Sharm el-Maya in Sharm, or Makadi Bay near Hurghada.
💛 Choose Cape Verde for long walks on wide, sandy beaches. Santa Maria Bay on Sal is generally more sheltered than Kite Beach, but the sea can still be too rough for swimming. Check the beach flags and follow the lifeguards’ advice.
Sal for restaurants, shops and day trips near your hotel. Santa Maria’s more sheltered water makes it the better bet with younger children.
Boa Vista for remote resorts and huge, largely undeveloped beaches.
Neither can promise calm sea swimming every day.
Egypt holidays give families more to do, with waterparks, kids’ clubs, evening entertainment and reef trips. Cape Verde is more about the hotel and beach, so check the pools and activities before booking.
On Sal in October: loggerhead turtles are hatching. Project Biodiversity runs a free daily talk at 4.30pm beside Hotel Riu Funana.
Worth leaving the hotel for: on Boa Vista, I rode a quad bike into the Viana Desert, stopped at a village and ran down the huge, powdery dunes.
Choose somewhere else if calm sea swimming every day is a must, or you want to leave your hotel and find plenty to do without booking a tour.

💡 My top tip: Going to Shark Bay on Sal? Pack water shoes, not flip-flops. You’ll wade through shallow water over sharp volcanic rock, with sea urchins underfoot. If you forget, you can rent water shoes there for about €3.
Early October? I’d pick Turkey. Travelling in the final week? Pick the Canaries are the safer bet.
Turkey’s south coast is still beach-hot early on, with typical October highs of 26°C in Antalya and 24°C around Dalaman. Later on, rain becomes more likely and resorts start winding down for winter. Canary Island resorts stay open all year, making them more reliable late in the month.
The sea is usually warmer than an unheated pool. Turkey’s sea can still feel warm late in October. In the Canaries, it’s swimmable rather than tropical, and the breeze can make you feel chilly when you get out.
If pool time matters: check whether the main pool is heated during your dates. ‘Heated pool’ doesn’t always mean the pool is heated all year.
Pick Turkey for an All Inclusive week at the hotel. Pick the Canaries to mix beach days with trips out.
• Alanya for large hotels with pools, slides and kids’ clubs. Check the transfer time from Antalya Airport before booking.
• Side for resort hotels with an old town and Roman ruins nearby.
Which Canary Island?
• Tenerife for waterparks, boat trips and lively resorts.
• Gran Canaria for sheltered southern beaches and the Maspalomas dunes.
• Lanzarote for Papagayo, Timanfaya’s lava fields and La Geria’s wineries.
• Fuerteventura for long, sandy beaches. Caleta de Fuste has a sheltered bay that works well with younger children. Corralejo and Jandía feel more exposed.
💡 What October felt like for me: I had a proper swim at Playa de las Américas in Tenerife, although the water wasn’t bath-warm. Breezy Lanzarote felt cooler, so I only dipped my toes at Papagayo before driving to La Geria’s volcanic vineyards. What could catch you out?
• Turkey: Going late October? Check whether outdoor pools, waterslides, kids’ clubs, waterparks and boat trips are still running.
• Canaries: Wind can take the edge off a warm day. For more shelter, try Los Cristianos in Tenerife or Puerto Rico and Amadores in Gran Canaria.
On Gran Canaria from 15 to 18 October 2026? Book a guided hike at the Gran Canaria Walking Festival.
Near Dalaman from 21 to 25 October 2026? Watch paragliding aerobatics from Belcekız Beach at the International Ölüdeniz Air Games. Pick another beach if you want a quiet day.

Madeira is the best fit. Typical highs reach 23°C in October – warm enough to eat outside, but comfortable for walking. Pick it for sightseeing and days on foot, rather than an all-day pool holiday.
Start with a morning walk beside a levada – one of Madeira’s old water channels – then stop for lunch in Funchal. The city may be sunny while the mountains are cool, wet and misty, so pack a light waterproof.
In Funchal, browse Mercado dos Lavradores, see the Old Town’s painted doors, then take the cable car to Monte.
• Funchal centre or the Lido if you’re not hiring a car. Stay central for the Old Town, cable car and buses. Pick the Lido for its seafront promenade and sea pools.
• Calheta for a better chance of sunshine and one of Madeira’s few sandy beaches.
• The north coast for green valleys, cliffs and Porto Moniz’s natural pools – but expect cooler, wetter weather.
Don’t expect miles of sand. Madeira’s rocky coast means a day by the water is more likely to mean a lido – a bathing complex with sea pools, sun terraces and steps into the Atlantic. Try Funchal’s Lido or Doca do Cavacas, or Porto Moniz’s natural volcanic pools.
Travelling from 6 to 11 October 2026? Madeira’s Nature Festival has guided walks and outdoor activities.
💡 My top tip: Walking one of Madeira’s official PR routes? Since January 2026, you need to reserve a time slot through SIMplifica.
💛 Choose Madeira if you’d rather walk, visit gardens and explore than lie on the sand all week. The trade-off: fast-changing weather and only a handful of sandy beaches.

The best-value dates are usually outside October half term, but no destination is always cheapest. Airport, luggage and board basis can move the final price more than the country name.
For late October holidays, search three or four departure dates rather than one Saturday. Compare nearby airports after adding petrol, parking or train fares. A cheap Room Only stay may lose its advantage once you add meals, bags and transfers.
Bulgaria can produce tempting prices, but October is the end of Sunny Beach’s season. Some hotels, bars and attractions will be closing, and the Black Sea coast is much cooler than Egypt or the Canaries. Check exactly what remains open; it is not a reliable “cheap but hot” shortcut.
Eligible Thomas Cook holidays can be secured with low deposits from £19pp. This spreads the initial cost; it does not reduce the total price, and the amount required varies.

Data note: Based on Thomas Cook UK bookings made up to 9 September 2026 for October 2026 departures. The 2026 figures are bookings to date, not final full-season totals.
Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are the hottest choices at around 30–31°C, with flights of roughly five hours. Fuerteventura and southern Turkey usually reach the mid-20s.
Most schools in England and Wales break up on Friday 23 October 2026, with half term running to Friday 30 October and kids back Monday 2 November. Scotland's break is earlier, 12–16 October, and Northern Ireland typically takes shorter non-instructional days rather than a full week. Check your own school's calendar, as academies and trusts can set different weeks.
Yes – Egypt and Cape Verde stay reliably warm through half term, and Turkey and the Canaries both suit family resorts with kids' clubs and waterparks. It's the busiest and priciest week of the month, so book early if your dates are fixed.
There isn’t one winner every year. To keep the price down, avoid half term, compare midweek flights from several UK airports.
Usually, yes. Southern Turkey and Mediterranean Spain cool down more noticeably as the month goes on. Egypt and the Canaries stay more consistent. Late October also clashes with school holidays, so it can cost more even when the weather is cooler.
No. The Canaries are the most reliable choice throughout October. Cyprus and southern Turkey work better earlier in the month. The sea is often still warm enough for a swim, but unheated pools can feel chilly. Travelling late? Check which seasonal facilities will still be open.
