I have been coming to Portaventura since I was 8 years old with my parents and now bring my own family however, things have changes over these years, some for the better and some worse. here is our most recent experience. location is great - we always fly into Reus; it takes 15 minutes by coach to reach the hotel. El Paso is a Portaventura hotel, so the theme park entrance is walking distance. We also walked into the town a few times (this took around 20 minutes) but if you are not a fan of walking then taxis are available. On arrival to the hotel, we had to join a fairly large queue to check in, the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful when you get to the front but it felt like they were not ready for us and the check in process took ages (eg tickets for lunch not all printed) this needs to be looked at as it could reduce queue times for all and cause less stress for everyone involved. Our rooms were not ready until 3pm (we had arrived at 11am) but we were told we could use the hotel facilities or go into the theme park and leave our luggage in the storeroom. When we finally found the storeroom (no signs) it was full of lockers! you now have to pay 4 euros for a big suitcase and 2 for a little one (we had 5 cases between us which would have cost 18 euros for 4 hours storage until our room was available) luckily for us, the lockers had all been filled and after waiting in line again and speaking to 3 more staff members, we were shown to another storage room and told we could leave our luggage free of charge! this is the first time I have seen lockers for storage, but the charges are awful, it all adds up. we booked all-inclusive but always take money with us for days out etc, some people might not do that, so the extra hidden charges are not fair. We had 2 rooms and the hotel put us next to each other which was great. We had asked for a travel cot for our toddler (this was mentioned on the booking and at check in) but no cot in either room on arrival. At this point we had been travelling since the night before and had a very tired 2-year-old. I called reception to be told they were on the way with a cot. 2 hours and 9 phone calls later they finally delivered one!! not a good start at all. The rooms are basic but had what we needed, valuables safe, storage for clothes, ensuite, hairdryer, towels etc. we had a balcony overlooking the family pool area, which was nice, but our floor was gritty from the moment we arrived (I think this is due to the sand they have around the pool area) We were told at check in we would need to book times for our evening meals and breakfast. you can do this online but getting a signal was tricky. We managed it but all week on arrival at the buffet, no one asked or checked our times as we had all-inclusive wristbands! can't help but feel we wasted another hour of our holiday trying to sort that out unnecessarily. The hotel is big but lacks atmosphere. we went in September to avoid the summer holidays, but it sometimes felt like they were getting ready to close for the end of season already. There is only one place for lunch (pool bar) but we ate in the theme park most of the week. Bar staff are friendly but slow at serving. Evening entertainment is Woody and a dancing friend at intervals through the evening but nothing else and no variety. My toddler loved seeing Woody, but it did get repetitive. also, the day we left, it rained a lot and I believe some of the hotel was flooded. The entertainment was always outside so I wonder what they do about the entertainment if it does rain a little? do they just cancel it? There is always somewhere open for you to grab a drink, coffee, ice cream etc but it takes a few days to figure out what time each bar/restaurant opens (no signs) you can purchase pool towels if you forget yours but again, it wasn't clear where you needed to go to sort this. They have a very small play area for kids near the family pool, pools are not heated (not even the toddler pool) but they are warm enough in the afternoon once the sun has been out. they have an indoor soft play area for kids (near the little play park) but we didn't use it during our stay. the all-inclusive ice cream is Carte Dor but only Strawberry, Vanilla or Chocolate, other flavours are available but charged. plenty of sunbeds around the pool and never had an issue getting a few (even in the afternoon) Buffet for breakfast and dinner is ok, lots of choice but gets repetitive through the week. be aware, timings for each sitting are set, so if you arrive late, you get less time to eat as they close between each sitting to get ready for the next ones. We chose this hotel to get the theme park entry included for the week. this was great however, a few years ago we could also book fast track tickets for the week at a discounted price. this is no longer available; they still offer a discount if staying in the hotel, but fast track is 1 day only and has doubled in price! the weekend queues were pretty long but once Monday arrived, we managed to get on all of the rides a few times with just 10-minute queues. if travelling during the holidays then fast track would be recommended and is costly. We were told at arrival that Ferrari land was open until midnight, we decided to go later in the week (Ferrari land is separate from the main park, but you get a day pass if staying in the hotel) but it closed at 4pm?! we went the next day, but information was misleading. Also, I wouldn't recommend Ferrari land unless you are a fan of F1. there is only one ride for children under 90cm and only one big ride. The main park is much better and has plenty for all the family including shows and characters walking around. Overall - we had a great holiday (it's what you make it) but I can certainly see where they are trying to make more money out of guests. I would rather pay extra for the overall holiday and have everything included on arrival for less stress. I will always return to Portaventura but might pick a different hotel next time.
Spend your money elsewhere
Currently staying here for the week. 3 days in and want to go home, this is not a 4 star hotel. Room is incredibly basic and chatty. Paid for full board and struggling to find places to eat lunch. Evening entertainment non existent. Stuck on same floor as school trip, putting up with noise, knocking on door etc. Eating dinner tonight was like being in a school canteen. Was given 3 door fobs on arrival. One needs to be left in slot in room to work electricity. 2 days in a row I came back to the room to find the cleaners have removed card from slot which means my phone has not been charged. The key fobs we’re returned to reception without informing me. As far as I’m aware I’m paying for the room 24 hours, if I want to charge my phone when out I should be able to. Also swimming pools not in use, kids really disappointed. Really disappointing for the cost, won’t recommend, won’t return
A Bit of a Letdown…
We visited this hotel around 10 years ago and loved it. However we were not so in love with it this time around. Check in took a while and very basic information was given out only. Room was in the main building on 3rd floor facing out to the courtyard. Could be a little noisy in the evenings until around 11pm. Room was in need of a little TLC in the bathroom as mould in between tiles and we felt in general the room just lacked a bit of storage for 3 of us. All meals have to be booked by scanning a QR code. You can book all your breakfast/dinner times in advance and there are 3 different time slots. We found the 10am and 7:30pm sittings to be the quieter sessions. Food was ok but a bit repetitive and our fairly fussy 6 year old did struggle to find things she liked. Though make sure to have some of the fresh pancakes made by a machine with a dollop of Nutella on top. Pool was quiet at all times but this was just due to the time of the year I guess. Bathrooms in and around the hotel lobby, restaurants and pool could definitely do with some maintenance. No hand dryers working, doorframes missing and one toilet was not even fixed to the wall! We knew that you could ask for dine around vouchers to use in the park. We had another long wait at reception to ask for these, followed by a tedious conversation where we went round in circles as we asked how much value the vouchers held and where we could eat, as we knew that not all the restaurants were open. After getting nowhere the staff member just wrote the date on the vouchers and handed over. We also at this point booked the El Coyote for the following night (or so we thought). I luckily checked the time of our reservation in the afternoon to be told it was closed that evening and that our booking had actually been made for the night before, despite the fact the staff member knew we had asked for the park vouchers for that day! The service in the bar next to El Coyote is extremely slow. They ask you to sit and order at table but I’d advise just to order and pay at the bar straight away. Far more efficient. Kids show is on a few times in the evening. We usually caught the 9pm one. It was mildly entertaining but played pretty much the same 2 songs/dances every night. Hotel is extremely busy at the weekends (as is the park) and definitely wear mosquito spray from the moment you arrive as we and pretty much everyone you saw, were bitten a copious amount of times!
