The Soller Train
No holiday to Majorca is complete without a ride on the Soller to Mallorca train. The Tren de Soller, also known as the 'Orange Express', was built in 1912 using money from the local orange and lemon trade. Today, this narrow-gauge railway is one of the area's most popular tourist attractions.
Hop on board
The train runs from the capital of Palma to the pretty Spanish town of Soller, and the journey takes around an hour. You'll travel on board classic wooden carriages through leafy lemon, orange, and olive groves and even stop off for a photo opportunity.
With five departures every day, the Soller Mallorca train should be on everyone's list of must-sees on a break to Majorca. The train departs from Placa d'Espanya in Palma, stopping off at Mirador des Pujol d'en Baya for stunning panoramic views over Soller, before making its long descent into the town.
The Orange Blossom Express
Once you arrive in Soller, many people choose to hop on board the Orange Blossom Express tram which takes you to the Port de Soller in around 20 minutes. This is the ideal place to come on sunny days as the harbourside is lined with local boutiques, restaurants and pavement cafés. Grab a glass of port, a cold beer or enjoy some lunch as you watch people go about their day.
Explore Soller town
The traditional town of Soller has an authentically Spanish atmosphere, with cobbled streets, green-shuttered Majorcan houses, a beautiful main square and a laid-back pace. It's easy to see why this is such a popular day trip after a journey on the Soller Mallorca train.
The main square, Placa Constitucio, is the ideal spot to soak up the sun while enjoying an ice cream or freshly squeezed orange juice at one of the many cafés, or sampling local delicacies at a tapas bar.
The square really comes to life on Saturdays when it's home to the local market from 8am to 2pm. Here you can pick up fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and cheese, or head for Laca des Mercat for a great selection of stalls selling souvenirs and jewellery.
Get out of town
You've reached Soller on the Soller Mallorca train, so what are you going to do now? Well, don't worry because the area surrounding the town is home to plenty of must-see attractions. The Botanical Gardens are just outside of town and a great spot to explore on a sunny day. Opened in 1992, they're home to many local endangered plants from the Balearics and Canaries, as well as the Museum of Natural Sciences.
You can't afford to miss the Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves) near Porto Cristo. Formed millions of years ago, a guided tour takes you deep underground to see astonishing rock formations and stalactites.
Enjoy a boat tour on Lake Martel, the largest underground lake in Europe, and relax as you watch a floating violin concert of classical music on the lake. It's a truly unique experience and one you simply must see on your trip to Soller.
