The Vine

The Vine is found near the harbour in Funchal on the south coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira. It is in a popular area a short walk from the waterfront, as well as from the museums, parks, and shopping malls of the bustling city. The small-town beach and bathing complex at Barreirinha are also within walking distance. Outside there is a rooftop pool area with a heated infinity pool. There is also a whirlpool and a sun terrace where you can relax and enjoy a drink brought to you by the poolside waiter service. In the hotel, there is a gym where you can keep active with a workout and a spa so you can relax afterwards with a session in the Turkish bath. You can also treat yourself to a massage, or to one of the beauty and wellness treatments available. These include vinotherapy and red-wine baths. During your stay at The Vine you can enjoy a drink in the hotel's two bars and have all of your meals in the two restaurants. When you fancy a snack or sweet treat, the hotel also has a patisserie. If you would like to head out to eat, you'll find lots of options around Funchal's marina. There are also plenty of bars and clubs within walking distance.

The Vine is in the centre of Funchal, the capital city of the island of Madeira. Funchal is popular with visitors because of its seafront parks and gardens, working harbour and historic architecture. You can see exotic plants at Monte Palace Tropical Garden or ride on the cable car to take in the views of the island from Monte Funchal. There are regular markets where you can pick up fresh produce and boutiques to browse for souvenirs. The beach at Barreirinha is 1km from the hotel and there is a lido complex 4km away. If you want to explore the island's coast, you can take a boat from the marina.

The Vine has a lobby bar, as well as a rooftop bar where you can enjoy drinks and snacks with views across the city. The hotel's buffet restaurant is open for breakfast and late breakfast, while the ‡ la carte restaurant opens for lunch and dinner. Both restaurants have kids' menus.

Santa Catarina Park, one of the largest in Funchal, is a short walk from the hotel. You can also explore the Wine Museum and Natural History Museum.

All rooms at The Vine have individually controlled air conditioning, as well as a minibar, TV, safe and Wi-Fi. Cots are available.

The hotel is in a mall so you can not drive all the way to the hotel where the reception is on the first floor. Very noisy outside the hotel, both a lot of traffic early in the morning and a green stall with iron bars which are set up every morning by loud staff Agreed price with 2 at the reception on arrival and got it in writing but at check out the hotel demanded 240 Euro more discussed with the manager for 15 - 20 minutes with a waiting airport transfer outside. Very simple breakfast without variations and only back off bread that you usually buy at petrol stations and similar places, even if there was a fantastic bakery on the ground floor. Very soft mattresses and a thin duvet in plastic. Inadequate cleaning (same waste in the shower for a whole week) The hotel lacks trained managers in both the reception and the restaurant as well as housekeeping

Nice stay

I would have to agree with some of the reviews here - overall good but not really a 5*experience. Good location in the centre of Funchal, you can walk everywhere, restaurants, shops, marina. Having said that, Madeira is a place where one should definitely get a car to explore the island, so this is ideal if you are planning to stay in Funchal and walk places. The hotel has an underground parking though with plenty of spaces. Very nice view of the city and harbour, comfortable sleep, overall friendly and helpful staff. The hotel seems dated in some areas. The breakfast was quite basic and not 5*level. Same things every day, some items looked over cooked and greasy, pancakes are not really pancakes etc. I haven’t tried the spa but the prices are above market.

Superb location!

To be absolutely honest I couldn’t say it’s a 5* hotel. For me It’s always the little things which you notice and they can add up. No refills of tea and sugar, light bulbs in need of replacing in the spa, layers of dust on a main decorative feature in the breakfast room. Just these little touches that are easy fixes could make it superb. The Hotel to me appears a little dated and in places tired. Let’s not detract from the fact though it’s staff are friendly helpful and can not do enough for you. They work tirelessly to ensure you are well catered for during your stay and are well informed. The location. This is the big one. Funchal is a small town really but spread wide along the coast. The Hotel is smack bang in the centre of everything within easy 10-20 min stroll time of the old town, 5 min to the promenade/harbour and local parks. We spent the majority of our time heading to the harbour and old town. It’s got vibe, street music, character, some great eats and this is where you find the cable car up to the hills - do this. €16 return of €11 one way to walk back down. It’s been written before that the Hotel is atop a 3 tier shopping centre which has a supermarket and on the bottom level which is very handy set among various shops. There is a couple of restaurants literally on your doorstep. An Italian which was ok and a great little place called Coachella just down the cobbled street opposite the main entrance. We had a room facing the interior of the hotel and could not really see much, that said we didn’t spend much time there but if you want a room with a view I believe it was only the pricey top suit which offered this. We didn’t use the rooftop more than once. The lattes were €4, although there is a happy hour 17.30-18.30. The pool is warm, not heated and ok for a dip and a couple of lengths. The view is superb though over the city and harbour and you can see parts of the old Funchal merged with the new. Breakfast always had decent variety but overcooked fried eggs. Free use of steam room, jacuzzi and has treatments available at above average spa prices. All in it’s a great place to stay and I highly recommend it but 5* I thought not.
