Friendly staff and comfy sunbeds made this a great choice
From when we first drove up outside, confused where to park, all of the staff were welcoming, helpful, polite and smiley. We were there right at the end of the season and they all seemed to be working very long days) but they were all really lovely. On arrival, we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a "side sea view "room which we were very happy with. The bathroom was tiny (there was only room for one person in there at a time), therefore the shower was tiny too and the bathroom floor did get wet. We put the foot towel down in the bathroom entrance to soak up the water and found this was not a very big deal. The mattresses was really comfortable. Half the hotel rooms are located in a separate building across a quiet side road (not ideal if you have kids), along with one of the outdoor pools, the indoor kids pool and the health spa. We were glad to be in the main building above reception and the dining room. The buffet was very good for a medium size hotel. In the morning there was cooked breakfast, pastries, yoghurt, fruit and cereals. For lunch and dinner there were several main course options, a great salad selection and a regular table of Cretan nibbles. The food was warm enough (not boiling hot, it is a buffet after all) and was quickly topped up when things ran out. There was always spaghetti (with a couple of sauce options), chips, rice, fresh fruit and then a different variety of meat, fish and vegetables for each meal. I am a vegetarian and there were always plenty of options for me to choose from (I think it would be more of a struggle if you were vegan). The puddings were yummy. The wine and beer on tap were perfectly acceptable and there was fresh orange juice for breakfast. Other drinks came out of machines (fizzy, squash and hot drinks). We were all-inclusive, but our friends decided to upgrade from standard all-inclusive to VIP so they could choose anything from the whole cocktail list (rather than just three options) and also get new bottles of water whenever they wanted. We decided not to (as I don’t drink alcohol and there was filtered water on tap) - this did mean that the drink options were limited. If you are big drinkers the 10 euro a day is well worth it; the other VIP benefits seemed a bit hit and miss and so were not really worthwhile. In October, it was too cold to sit outside for breakfast or dinner but it was lovely and warm most days at lunch time. You needed a cardigan or a coat at night when the dancers or musicians were outside (although we thought it was great that they had some form of entertainment each evening). The hotel dining area was simple and could have had a little more atmosphere, but there were comfy sofas round by reception. It was all very clean and there were always staff on hand to help with any problems or queries. The beach was sandy on one side of the river and shingly on the other side. The sunbeds were really comfy and (as we were at the end of the season) there were always some free. There were different areas to sunbathe around the pools and on the beach, so you could chase the sun (or the shade). The outside pools were both freezing cold and I didn’t see anyone ever go in them. The inside pool was a kids pool (only 1m deep) and the indoor jacuzzi had no water in it whilst we were there. The village of Kalyves was quiet, with a couple of tourist shops and restaurants, but we enjoyed the buffet so only ate out (at lunchtime) a couple of times. All in all, we had a wonderful holiday and would recommend this hotel as reasonably priced, mid-range accommodation with a nice beach, good food and friendly staff.

Whilst the hotel, room and entertainment were good the food was repetitive and the hot choices were always luke warm at best and in many instances cold. I have no idea why but many people agreed and surprised that both the hotel operators and Jet2 have not solved the issue. We had to eat out more than we had planned just to get a hot meal. We can recommend overall but please don't expect any hot meals.
Lovely hotel, amazing service and most relaxing stay
We had lovely 10 day stay at Kalyves Beach Hotel. Well organised, clean hotel. Lots of relaxing times Hotel is right on the beach, comfy sun loungers and free WiFi. Good selection of food and very generous Cretan hospitality. Special thank you to Penelope who made our stay special. We had few minor issues on arrival but they were resolved with generosity and care by Penelope. Lovely Murielle was very welcoming too.
