Lovely hotel, great location, fabulous pool... sadly poor food quality
First the positives...Ideally located hotel at the west side of playa Fanabe beach 5 minute walk. The hotel presents itself as modern and very clean. Hotel reception staff were helpful and polite, usual push on local tours but could see we just wanted to get to our room and grab a drink. . Our room was E3-1, great position facing the pool (which be aware has an additional £40 charge for pool view) This had the sun all day until around 4pm. Above our block was a roof solarium, fantastic views out to sea and the evening sunset, adults only area, but inevitably there were parents taking small children up to lie on the 'Bali beds', stupid thing to do as the roof had shallow if not no railings. Our apartment, all be it dated, was spacious, spotless clean with 2 double bedrooms and a large sofa bed in the living room. Bathroom again very clean, you can tell the age of the property with the bathroom condiments i.e shoe shine kit, sewing kit etc not really needed . The pool area is stunning, the pool itself heated. We never had to reserve sunbeds (although the germans felt they had too every morning) accessed from the pool deck was a fully equip gym with sauna also a kids chill out area. Now sadly the negatives...Food, where to start. Breakfast came out better, good selection, one member one staff cooking fresh omelettes, fried eggs and pancakes, they seemed very busy, all the usual breakfast items, nothing exceptional. Evening meal let the hotel down quite badly, in fact out of our 4 night break we only dined there twice. Firstly you are given a time slot by reception, this can only be changed my the restaurant manager ours was 8.30pm which for Uk is a tad late. Be aware the restaurant has strict dress rules, the sign states no swim shorts, flip flops, bikini's etc understandably. But when our 20yr son tried to gain entry with smart shorts and new trainers he was refused, told to put trousers on..! And yet our 22yr old daughter was okay with a mini skirt and sandals? Off fashioned rules so be warned. The evening food lacked any kind of lustre or seasoning, food was mediocre and on one of the nights still frozen. Staff were thin on the ground, no point complaining to a kid who's cleaning away plates. The choice was repetitive with many plates left with food on them, a total waste of food. Staff levels were down compared breakfast, leaving many tables in a mess. Its a shame as the room is beautiful with the backdrop of foliage, but they need to seriously re do the menu, stop catering for the tastes of the pensioners..no taste...tons of salt. My advice is to go Bed and Breakfast..save yourself money.
Enjoyable stay over Xmas & New Year
First visit to this place and we were more than pleased with the hotel. In an ideal location, this is pleasant place with wonderful staff. Our accommodation was fairly poolside & although a little difficult to find on arrival, proved to be more than adequate for our b&b needs. The apartment crucially had separate rooms for my friend (who is a light sleeper) & myself, who snores like a drain!!! I kid you not. The option to sleep on the comfy sofa in the lounge area worked out just fine. The cleaners did a wonderful job & kept so cheery throughout our stay, despite having what appears to be such a mundane job. The place was spotless. The bathroom was well equipped with a decent shower & a few extras like body wash & toothbrushes laid on. The kitchen was tidy & all we needed. Didn't use the TV, as we never go away to watch what we do when not on holiday (why do people do this????) The pool was lovely & generally there were available sunbeds. The bar was excellent & so too the lifeguard. Breakfast was rather basic, but it's what you get in most Spanish hotels anyway. It was certainly one of the best orange juices, water & bread options I have ever had. Reception staff were absolute stars. Couldn't help you enough & we were rather sad to leave them. However, we will return. In summary, well worth staying at for location & for feeling at home. Rafael was the star of the show!
GOOD LOCATION AND APARTMENT
The apartments are in a good location near the beach with many shops and restaurants within a 30 minute walk. The welcome at reception seemed more formal than friendly, I got a map a key card but no sign of the usual leaflet setting out renting the safe, accessing the internet, a menu for the bar / cafe, etc. Initially I found the layout rather disjointed and haphazard but on reflection I can see that it has actually been very well designed to ensure that every room gets more than 4 hours os sun a day and most get a view of the pool area. Apartments are accessed via a range of walkways and lifts and it looks like every room can be accessed via a ramp and lift. My room was on the second floor and had a good view of the pool and I got the sun from early morning until 2pm. The apartment was large and well set out but was showing signs of wear, it had a huge bed but it was a little too firm for me, great walk in shower and nice patio furniture. For self catering cooking there are plenty of accessories and there is a hob/full oven, microwave/grill, coffee maker, toaster and kettle. The fridge also has a small seperate freezer compartment. The shower room had both hand and shower wash dispensers which were refilled regularly and the good quality towels seemed to be changed almost evry day by the efficient and friendly housemaid. The pool area and bar / cafe are reasonable for the size of the complex but unfortunately almost half the area gets very little sunlight leading to a 7am rush to get the hot seats. I also have to give particular mention to the life guard who kept a firm control over unsafe activities around the pool, assisting new guests in finding their rooms and helping the housemaids with their large trolleys up the ramps all with a smile and friendly welcome he never stopped from 10am until he left at 18:30pm. Personally given all the pool area early morning lounger booking and shuffling around as the sun moved I preferred to use the ADULT ONLY solarium on the roof of E block which is quite big and gets the sun all day. It currently has 2 free Bali beds and around 8 loungers which is strange given the number of complaints about the lack of loungers in the sun around the pool, I am sure you could easily get another 20 or so sunbeds up there. GUEST HINTS / TIPS If you want a quiet child free day sunbathing use the rooftop solarium. If you need shopping (fresh bread, cakes, fruit, etc) turn left out of the apartments and go 200mtrs up the hill you will find a large HyperDino supermarket on the right. Restuarants within 15 minutes walk I would recommend, The Winchester and The Ganges Indian Restaurant. NOTE TO HOTEL Wifi was very poor, some days I couldn't connect and when I did it wasn't a strong signal in the room. The loose cushion wicker chairs in reception have to be the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in, looking around the other guests seemed to have the the same view as most were using the leather couches. It would be useful if you could provide washing up liquid and cloths in the apartments. As a customer service you could sell 5ltr water bottles at reception to save guests having to carry them back to the hotel. WOULD I RETURN TO THE PARQUE DEL SOL Yes I would, I had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay there.
