“Visiting Arnie's Place”

In 1965, so the story goes, after visiting Bay Hill for the first time, Arnold Palmer called his wife Winnie and declared: "Babe, I've just played the best golf course in Florida and I want to own it." By 1974, he did. Bay Hill became the Palmers' winter home. And he shaped the course and lodge into one of golf's most storied destinations. Since 1979, it has hosted the Arnold Palmer Invitational, one of the most signature stops on the PGA Tour. Located at 9000 Bay Hill Boulevard in Orlando, the course and lodge are private properties. But the golf shop is open to the public. Visitors can purchase official PUMA and Arnold Palmer's line of apparel, the famous Palmer umbrella, clubs, eyewear and footwear. Since Palmer's death in 2016, the club and lodge have been owned by his youngest daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Roy Saunders. The property offers 27 holes of golf over 270 acres, a 69-room lodge, six guest cottages, the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy, tennis, instructional golf lessons, spa, fitness center and marina. You must be a member or a registered lodge guest to have access to the golf course and all club amenities. As a sports reporter for 40 years, I never learned to play golf. But I covered the PGA Tour from 1971 to 1978, the golden era of Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Trevino, Miller and Watson. Just walking around Bay Hill brings back wonderful memories, like the time I was present at a press conference in the locker room of the clubhouse at Oakmont Country Club during the 1963 U.S. Open, when Palmer was asked if he was interested in running for governor of Pennsylvania. He preferred golf. And winters at Bay Hill.

“A great golf weekend and great resort experience”

The accommodations and golf course are top-notch. The rooms are not plush or over-the-top luxurious but very comfortable and very nice. The staff are all very pleasant and nice and we had the good fortune to have Johnna as our breakfast server. She was just the best and so pleasant she made the meal even better! We appreciated her attentiveness and responsiveness.

“A Memorable Weekend”

I went with my son for a quick golf weekend. Our timing was both good -- and not so good. A PGA tournament was coming in a few weeks, so the course was in amazing shape. But they were limiting the play on the course to keep it fresh, so we struggled to get a tee time leading up to our arrival and I booked another nearby course instead. I can't say enough for how accommodating everybody was -- from the front desk to the pro shop to the dining room. Incredibly professional, polite, and friendly. They were able to squeeze us in for 18 holes at the last minute, a favor that I did not take lightly and that turned what was going to be a nice weekend into an unforgettable memorable weekend for my son and I. The room was great. Breakfast was great. The golf was amazing (even if we did lose plenty of balls in the rough!). But he was able to par three different holes, he hit a couple 300 yard drives straight down the fairway, he just missed a hole in one by about 5 feet on another hole, and we came away excited to watch the tournament on TV in a few weeks and see all the places we just played. Thanks for the memories.

“Great Golf terrible accommodations”

If the men on our trip rated this trip solely on the golf experience then it would be a 5. However 10 of our group of 18 were not golfing so we were just able to view our experience without the golf. Again, the 8 that played golf said it was the best experience of golf they had ever had. The club house provided breakfast however it took a very long time. Only a few of us had lunch and it was fantastic with very attentive service. The bar was top notch with Cheryl. My biggest complaint was the cottage/house we rented. We had 4 houses and they were all very outdated. The lights flickered non stop which gives me migraines. The house had a moldy smell and/or a sewage smell. One night we walked to the club house from our house and tried to enter the back side of the club house. The bar and restaurant were full. Several service people and patrons saw us 4 ladies waiting outside and the door was locked. They looked at us and turned their heads. Finally a very kind man from across the bar came and opened the door for us. Again we were dressed club appropriate and had a private dinner at the club. Our only fault was we didn’t know the rules and entrances that were allowed at this club. I would hope that no one would be treated that way at our club. The spa was closed and the pool was nothing special. If you are there just for golf, this is your place. If you are planning a club destination for a mixed group or family, look somewhere else.

“Grill room- excellent! ”

Had lunch here before playing a round. I’ve been here before, but the lunch yesterday was so good. I had a gyro with a side of fries. My father had the fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. Our server Sophie made sure that we had everything we needed. Friendly, professional, and on top of everything. Jersey was the manager on today and followed up with us to make sure that we had everything we needed, and that our items were cooked to our satisfaction. Such great service and food! My round started well- I think it was the lunch- but then I fell apart. I hope to be back here some other time soon. Thanks again to Sophie and Jersey!!!!
