Marmaris - currency

The currency used in Marmaris is the Turkish lira (shortened to TRY or ₺). You can sometimes pay in euros or pounds sterling too, and might even be asked to, though lira gives you the best exchange rate.

• It’s a good idea to buy your lira before you go, so you’ll have cash to spend as soon as you arrive and the chance to avoid high fees and poor exchange rates.

• Turkish money comes in notes and coins of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lira, and coins of 1kr (kuruş), 5kr, 10kr, 25kr, 5kr and 1 lira. There are 100 kuruş (kr) in one lira.

• Cards are widely accepted in Marmaris, including secure travel money cards, but you’ll definitely need cash as well.

• There are no restrictions on how much you can take into Turkey, and you can bring up to US$5,000 worth home with you.

• Turkish lira are only valid in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, but you can exchange anything you’ve got left over when you get home.

• Remember to let your bank know that you might be using your card on holiday.

• Credit cards can be very expensive to use anywhere abroad, so leave them behind and stick to your debit card.

Need more cash?
You’ll find cash machines (ATMs) and foreign exchange facilities around the resort. If you’re looking for a cash machine, keep your eye out for ‘bankamatik’ as well as the usual ATM signs.

Tip: ATMs in Marmaris usually charge a high fee to withdraw money, but don’t worry, there are some free machines too, most often at bank branches. A quick Google should help you find them!
