Archaeological sites in Bodrum

The rich history that shaped the beautiful resort of Bodrum can still be seen through several archaeological sites around the city. Perfect for a late afternoon activity out of the hot sun; get close to one of the amazing Seven Wonders of the World. A Testament to its time period, the 4th century B.C. Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, was the most extravagant and was so architecturally unique, it gave its name to all monumental tombs that followed. Famous designers from different countries all added their own customary style to the construct the elaborate resting place for King Mausolus. Not much of the ruins remain today, but you can still visit the archeological site to marvel at the handcrafted decorations and columns of the ancient Mausoleum.

Nearby the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, just off a main road, are the stunning remains of the 4th century B.C. Bodrum Amphitheater. The striking structure gives another peak into the great past of Bodrum in the ancient era. Originally it sat about 13,000 spectators for theater performances and, some of the names of the Roman's rich and famous are interestingly etched into the stonework. Climb to the top of the steep seating for stunning views of the city. The amphitheater is still used for performances and concerts today, so don't miss your chance for a ticket, as it's bound to be spectacular.
