Colomares Castle in Benalmadena

Just outside the old picturesque village of Benalmadena Pueblo is the fairy tale like Colomares Castle. The enchanting structure was built between 1987 and 1994 in honour of explorer Christopher Columbus. A real labour of love, the monument covers an area of 1,500 metres and was surprisingly designed by a doctor and built by two builders.

The meticulously carved decorations are finely detailed and symbolise Columbus' historic journeys, like the statue of the three ships that first sailed to America and the Catholic coat of arms of the monarchs at this time. Whilst examining the spectacular architecture, walk inside to see the tiny church covering just 1.96 metres. It's listed in The Guinness Book of Records as the smallest church in the world.
