The Cliff Bay Resort

The Cliff Bay is a luxury coastal resort in Sao Martinho, a neighbourhood in Madeira's capital city, Funchal. The hotel sits on a natural headland above Funchal Bay beside the Atlantic Ocean. It has direct access to the sea and an award-winning ala carte restaurant with two Michelin stars. During your stay, you can enjoy the use of a combined indoor and outdoor pool, an outdoor pool, a spa and a dry and steam sauna. Whirlpools are also available. If you like to keep up your fitness plan during your holiday, you can use the gym. In the evenings, if you're looking to relax with a show, live music is organised several times a week. While staying at The Cliff Bay you can spend time in Funchal. A shuttle bus runs between the hotel and the central area of the city several times a day. Upper and lower Funchal are connected by a cable car, which is a popular tourist experience. Lower Funchal includes the Old Town district, home to most of the city's clubs and bars. Upper Funchal is greener and a touch more relaxed. Here, you might like to stroll in the colourful Monte Palace Tropical Garden, which has a waterfall and koi pond as well as Asian-inspired temples.

The Cliff Bay is named for its elevated position on the southern coast of Madeira. The local area of Sao Martinho has bars and restaurants. Alternatively, if you fancy a trip away from the hotel, you can head into the busier centre of Funchal, 2.2km away. Here, you might like to explore the museums and cathedral built into this hillside city or try some local wine. If you want to explore the rest of the mountainous island, popular destinations include its traditional villages, UNESCO-registered laurel forests, waterfalls and vineyards. Adventurous types might like to head on a day trip to the Pico Ruivo mountains.

The Cliff Bay resort offers a great selection of restaurants and bars. At the hotel you find one restaurant awarded with 2 Michelin Stars and you can also have a classic afternoon tea in one of the bars.

You can order treatments at the hotel spa, spend time in the onsite library, wander through the garden or relax in one of the lounges.

Rooms at The Cliff Bay have air conditioning for your comfort. All have minibars, a bath, seperate shower and room service is available 24 hours a day.

Sleep Quality

Excellent hotel, let down by food and entertainment

This hotel is in a stunning location on the edge of a cliff. It has amazing sea views, wonderful pools and and excellent sundecks. The rooms are nice, but a little small for 5 star and lack reasonable storage space for clothes. The beds are two very large single beside each other. They are too big to be made up together - so side by side single beds are the only option. Staff are efficient, mostly friendly, but very reserved in their engagements. Could come across as abrubt, but we found the same in a lot of restaurants in Madeira, so perhaps it is a cultural facet. Generally we found the food pretty poor. The breakfast is OK. Plenty of cut fruit (not much imagination) small selection (of non premium brand) cereals. A small meat and cheeses counter, a small hot counter (sausage, hash brown, beans and bacon'ish meat). An egg/pan station manned by staff who were not properly trained. Raw omelettes and eggs were a regular compalint and burned pancakes from time to time. The dinner in the main restaurant has very limited selection and a very constrained wine list. Could not get a bottle of Italian wine on the Italian night we ate there. Answer from the waitress was, well you are in Portugal. The pool bar/restaurant food is quite good but very expensive for poolside food! (In reality it is really a nice restaurant that happens to be beside the pool). €19 for a burger. You have to move to the restaurant for any food or snacks. They will not serve at the sunbeds or allow you to take food there youself - so in effect no pool service for food. The pool staff are probably the highlight of the hotel. Loads of sunbeds and parasols and we never had to wait for one even in peak times. Staff will set the parasol up and move it into position for you. There is entertainment at the happy hour in the garden (5.00-6.00). We went most nights. It is a fabulous setting and very relaxing. There is music in the bar later on most nights, but it was pretty poor and the bar is poorly laid out and lacks any sense of an intimate or relaxing setting. We only went back twice in 14 nights. Overall I would say the location and quality of the hotel, pools, views, garden, is stunning. Ranks with some of the best we have stayed in worldwide. It is however let down by very mediocre food, lack of entertainment and atmosphere at night and middle of the road service levels. I'd say a great hoted that could be outstanding with a different approach.

Enjoyed our stay here

We loved this hotel, despite its unusual layout. It’s on a number of levels and to reach the sea and outdoor restaurant you need to use a lift. But worth the effort. It’s a bit concrete and could do with a big of landscaping but still nice. There’s 2 levels of restaurant depending what room you book, but the standard one has a good breakfast buffet. The dinner perhaps less exciting but there are numerous restaurants in the area. What we liked most about it was the service. We had a leak from the air conditioner onto our suitcase. They offered to launder bout clothes and gave us a complimentary lunch at the restaurant which was more than enough to make up for it. Overall we really enjoyed our time here. Skews older as does Madeira generally!

Everything about the hotel smacks of quality. Accommodation, public rooms, gardens, staff and especially the food. Madeira is a lovely, sedate, safe place and this is a jewel of a hotel. The Cliff Bay is close to many restaurants and bars for those who want to look more widely and is 10 or 15 minutes by foot into Funchal. Thoroughly recommended.
