Porto Santa Maria is an adults-only hotel which welcomes guests aged 16 and over. It's a seafront hotel in the town of Funchal on the island of Madeira. You can step out of the hotel right onto the promenade, which leads directly into the old town. There's a pool area with one outdoor pool and a pool bar. From here, you'll have a view of the ocean and you'll be able to see the cruise ships coming and going. Inside the hotel, there's a spa with a sauna and an indoor pool. You can also get a massage and there's a whirlpool to relax in. If you want to keep your fitness routine going during your stay, you may choose to work out at the gym. The hotel has a restaurant and an indoor bar, which shows major sporting events as well as hosts live music nights several times a week. Just outside Porto Santa Maria, you can get a cable car that takes you to the upper levels of Funchal, where you can explore the wild fauna of the botanical gardens.

Porto Santa Maria is in the centre of Funchal's old town district. This is a place where you can wander down narrow cobblestone streets, taking in the historic churches and squares, or relax in the many bars and restaurants. Funchal provides a base to explore the natural surroundings of Madeira on foot or by car. If you want to take some time out from the bustling seafront, there are hiking trails that you can follow further inland. The UNESCO World Heritage Laurisilva of Madeira laurel forest is a short drive from the hotel.

Porto Santa Maria has a restaurant and two bars. Both bars have terraces. You'll also find places to eat and drink within walking distance of the hotel.

Porto Santa Maria has a spa with a sauna, whirlpool and massage. The hotel holds regular entertainment in the evenings and also has a pool table.

The indoor pool is a combined indoor and outside pool. At the roof terrace you can find sun lounges, sun beds, a shower and toilets.

Room for improvement

We'd split our stay in Funchal and this was the second hotel after staying in the Cliff Bay - maybe that's why the room for improvement was more noticeable. Staff were lovely, though not as friendly and professional here on the reception desk. The location is perfect for enjoying Funchal and the old town and there are so many lovely restaurants nearby. We did enjoy lunch in the pool bar a couple of times but very much let down on the second visit by being served a pork wrap instead of a vegan wrap with no real apology. Drinks in the bar at happy hour were great value, though there were no snacks and no real atmosphere at happy hour or later. There were always lots of sunbeds to enjoy soaking up the sun, though the roof terrace was our favoured spot as it was quieter, the beds had soft cushions and we had the hot tub to ourselves. Breakfast was good, food choices plentiful and hot and the staff here were great. The weather was superb and we enjoyed eating outdoors and could also enjoy a glass of fizz with breakfast. However, on our last day the restaurant was late to open which meant we had to rush before our car to the airport. We'd booked a suite which gave us an amazing view of the fireworks on New Year's Eve. This was an absolute highlight of our stay!

Perfect Holiday

What an introduction for my first visit to Madeira. It was a perfect holiday in every way, The hotel was ideally situated, every member of staff couldn’t have been more helpful to make the holiday special. The food was excellent breakfast was like a banquet, afternoon specialty ice creams on the terrace were irresistible. The evening meals were of a high quality and the service matched, to finish off the evening the bar was visited for cocktails and listen to the music provided. The weather was at least 22degrees each day Hopefully another visit next year

Enjoyable stay

Lots of good things about this hotel. We already knew the location is great - which was our primary reason for choosing to stay here. Our sea view room was spacious and spotless, with a balcony overlooking a small, pretty gorden and then of course the sea. It was a bit close to local noise at night... However, it is good to be so near excellent restaurants and the town centre itself. And the kitchenette facilities are very useful, in our case not actually for cooking but for preparing rolls or salad for lunch on the balcony. (Not, I hasten to add, by filching stuff from the breakfast room, as I was horrified to see people are still doing). Staff were pleasant, and the communal areas very attractive. and well maintained. We didn't try the pool or spa. There were one or two rough edges: on day one the safe in our room, with cash and documents inside, refused to open. Several staff members came in succession to try to open it, and it was quite a long and anxious wait before it was fixed. We felt unable to trust it for the rest of our stay, which was inconvenient. Staff were helpful - but an apology would have been nice. Breakfast is all buffet - nothing cooked to order - but plentiful if unvarying. Excellent breads and pastries, and loads of fresh fruit. Good coffee too. Just don't get me started on the "orange juice".... All in all, we enjoyed our stay here, and would certainly book again.
