“A remarkable hotel with faded glamour and an exciting future”

A remarkable hotel with faded glamour — and an exciting future This hotel is a real testament to a bygone era. Apparently King Carlos of Spain proposed to his future wife Sophia here, and the hotel’s photographs feature some fascinating famous guests, including David Cameron and George Lazenby. With a helipad next door, it clearly was once the place to be. The decades have taken their toll, but there are encouraging signs of new life. Parts of the hotel have been refurbished, and particularly exciting is what is happening around the pool. A local group of three architects has taken over the pool area and has ambitious plans to turn it into a proper spa/beach club, including a sauna and plunge pool. They are already making improvements, with a bar area serving great pizza and improvements to the pool filtration system, which should significantly reduce the algae problems mentioned in some older reviews. The 32-metre seawater pool itself is quite extraordinary, and the walls surrounding it provide a unique feeling of privacy and protection. I think the spa area could be spectacular in a couple of years. The pool area is part of a 17th century fort and provides substantial protection from wind and the sea. The view of the waves crashing on the rocks through the 3 oval windows is wonderful The hotel bar is also worth visiting, particularly around twilight. It’s reasonably priced and has fabulous views over the sea. Breakfast was adequate, although we didn’t eat in the restaurant. Our room was perfectly adequate but didn’t really live up to the spectacular location. The furnishings were rather basic and the room lacked the sense of occasion you might expect from such an extraordinary building. The views, however, are stunning, and it also looks as though the windows have finally had a good clean! Sadly, the person who originally created the hotel passed away this summer, so perhaps this will bring some fresh input and further modernisation. We thoroughly recommend staying for one night to experience the place. We probably wouldn’t stay for much longer at its current stage, but we had a great time and the setting is genuinely spectacular. Most of all, it’s encouraging to see local people with real enthusiasm taking such a remarkable asset and trying to restore it to something approaching its former glory. The history, architecture and location are all there. It just hasn’t quite capitalised on its potential for many years. We’re definitely coming back. Hopefully, when we do, the spa area will be as spectacular as planned—and the hotel itself will have upped its game to match it. A fascinating, slightly faded piece of glamour with enormous potential.

“Terrible experience”

It was the worse experience ever. Did NOT match the pictures on line. My room at the end of the hall had a broken window, curtains were ribbed off the rod and hanging. The food was terrible and not warm, cold. The staff were not engaging, and very dirty, could even see out the window. Save your money

“Awful. Don’t stay there. Nicer places up the street!!”

It was awful. Place is very dirty. Service is terrible. Food was awful. You could see leftover dessert left out not refrigerated. Don’t go there!!!!!

“A very tired old lady”

I am sure that back in the past this was a "go to" destination ( judging by all the photos in the foyer) - but that was well in the past. Although adequate the hotel just looks and feels incredibly tired and it seems no money has been spent on it for years. The location is good, if you want a beach nearby, but as a result the elements are quite cruel to the infrastructure. Rotting windows, plaster falling off the exterior and probably was last painted in the 70's. Breakfast was OK but be prepared to cue for the one and only coffee machine and on one morning the only fresh fruit ( a bowl of melon) ran out at 9.00am even though breakfast was supposedly served until 10.30am. It has 4 stars etched onto the front doors - that was a very long time ago.

“Wonderful customer service at the Muchaxo”

I stayed at the Muchaxo with my mother, and we can’t stop raving about our experience there! Ricardo, a hotel director, introduced himself on our first day, and went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. His consideration and customer service was outstanding. The hotel is historic, right on the beach, clean and includes a yummy breakfast. We can’t wait to go back!
