Explore moreExperience the heart of Krakow with a visit to Market Square, known to locals as the Rynek, and prepare to set eyes on one of the biggest medieval squares in Europe. Arriving at Market Square, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful buildings that, over the centuries, have seen public executions, coronations, revolts and more.
As you explore the 13th century square, you’ll find out more about its fascinating and sometimes troubled past, from a fireworks display gone wrong in the 17th century, to the German name-change to ‘Adolf Hitler Platz’ during World War Two.
Today, your visit to the Market Square will be a much more joyful experience, as you take in the vibrant atmosphere surrounded by florists, open-air cafes, gift shops and horse drawn carriages. Spend some time taking pictures before exploring the square’s medieval buildings. From the world’s first shopping mall, Cloth Hall, where you can browse the market stalls, to the Rynek Underground museum that tells stories from times gone by, there’s plenty to see on Market Square. It’s also home to the 19th century Polish Art Gallery, the beautiful St Mary’s Basilica, the Church of St Adalbert and the Town Hall Tower.
Throughout the year, Market Square hosts all kinds of outdoor concerts, festivals and special markets, so keep an eye on the what’s on guides and don’t miss out – it's a top choice for Christmas market breaks! If you’re here over the New Year, the square is home to the biggest party in Poland. If you want to find out more about Krakow, most guided city tours start and finish here too.
