Escape the hustle and bustle of the city streets as you take a walk through Vondelpark, the largest green space in Amsterdam. Attracting around ten million visitors every year, the huge Vondelpark is packed full of things to see and do, whether you want to relax in the sunshine, watch live music or let the kids burn off their energy at the play park.
Originally opened to the public in 1865 and extended in 1877, Vondelpark is now a popular place for residents and tourists to unwind. As you walk among the English-style gardens under the shade of horse chestnuts and birch trees, through grassy lawns and along winding pathways, you’ll understand exactly why the park is loved by so many people.
After relaxing on the lawns, grab a bite to eat at one of the park’s many restaurants, which include Grook Melkhuis, Blauwe Theehuis, and Cafe Vertigo at the Pavilion. In the summer, you can watch open air concerts near the Eeghenstraat entrance. With free admission to see music, dance and theatre, it’s worth arriving early as you spot wildlife including wild ducks and herons, and look out for sculptures including The Fish by Picasso.
If you have young children, there’s no shortage of things to do at Vondelpark. For hours of fun, head to the large play park close to Groot Melkhuis, or explore the park’s six smaller play areas. For older children, rent some roller skates and let them cruise along the pathways with the locals.
When your visit to Vondelpark comes to an end, take a ten minute walk east to the Van Gogh Museum, or a little further to the Rijksmuseum.
