While Cancun might be famous for its heady nightlife and kicking club scene, holidays to Playa Mujeres offer a stunning, exclusive, and tranquil retreat from the banging beats. Cancun might only be a bay away, but our Playa Mujeres holidays offer beautiful beaches, superb restaurants, plenty of space, and lots of peace and quiet. Unlike many of the resorts in Cancun, this one wasn’t purpose-built.
Originally, it was a small fishing village, which has since grown and developed to meet the demands of tourism while still retaining much of its unique charm and quirks. Golfers will be able to keep swinging their five-irons at the excellent Playa Mujeres Golf Club, while those who fancy something a little more connected to nature, there’s the opportunity to explore the stunning undersea world of the nearby coral reefs.
Just north of Cancun, this seaside resort community lets travellers kick back, relax and enjoy luxury accommodation. With breathtaking views across the Mexican Caribbean, you’ll discover spectacular seas filled with beautiful marine wildlife. Easily accessible from Cancun airport, it’s a great base for exploring the Yucatan Peninsula and beyond.
Beaches and sports
With stunning bleached white sand dominating the nearby coastlines, every view’s a photo opportunity. With its remote location, Playa Mujeres beach is an oasis of calm, with a private members club vibe. You’ll find a 170-slip inland marina just a short walk away, while the Greg Norman designed golf course boasts lagoon and ocean-front holes for a relaxing few games. Snorkelling, diving and swimming with whale sharks are all popular activities off the shores nearby.
History and culture
Playa Mujeres is close to an important Mayan archaeological site, with an iconic stepped pyramid, columns, temples and sculptures so impressive, you could easily spend a whole day exploring. Fascinating and engaging, you’ll be blown away by evidence of a culture that inhabited these lands some 1,000 years ago. Also close by are the ruins of the ancient walled city of Tulum, in a spectacular location right on the beach overlooking the Caribbean. Here you’ll see some important buildings from a time when Tulum was a significant sea port, including the 7.5m tall El Castillo also known as ‘the lighthouse’.
For adventurous families
Playa Mujeres is a tranquil spot, much loved by couples and now becoming increasingly popular with families too. Kids and adults will love the beach, water sports and boat trips across the bay to Isla Mujeres. And with Cancun nearby, city life Mexican-style can be explored with ease. Take a day trip out to catch a film or a showor get those essential souvenirs in one of the many malls and markets. It’s a great location for trips out to historically significant sites and family-friendly theme parks, where mixing and mingling with wildlife is the order of the day.

Chilling Out: Holidays to Playa Mujeres are all about peace and relaxtion, but offer all the sun, sea and scenery of the Cancun area, but without the crowds and frantic nightlife. With fewer hotels and a smaller population, the main beach is rarely crowded and perfect for couples or families who just want to get away from it all. The sugar-white sands shelve gently into the intensely blue waters, making it safe for youngsters who want to splash about. With palm trees fringing the beach, you’ll find a few vacant hammocks to chill out in, when you need a little shade.
Nature Lovers: A short boat trip will take you to the Isla Mujeres: a stunning island, littered with beaches, lagoons, and fragrant mangrove forests. While the eastern side of the island is jagged and rocky and virtually impossible to swim in, the western side boasts superb snorkelling conditions and a coral reef. It’s possible to see Sea Turtles, shimmering shoals of fish, and even glimpse the massive yet completely harmless whale shark. The Isla Mujeres is also home to the ‘cave of sleeping sharks’, an underwater cave where whale sharks and other species gather, to rest.
Teeing Off: If you’ve got a passion for golf, no holiday to Playa Mujeres would be complete without a trip to the local golf club. With 18 holes and a stunning backdrop, the course offers exciting challenges for even the most seasoned player. However, if you’re new to the game then there are tutorials on offer with club professionals, and with the facility to rent clubs, there’s no need to bring your own.

Taco Festival
Playa Mujeres’ Taco celebrations are less of a festival and more of a weekly event. Each Tuesday evening is dedicated to honouring one of Mexico’s most popular foods, you’ll find live music on the local beach, with stalls serving corn tortillas alongside spiced beef, grilled chicken, local cheeses, and handmade guacamole, seasoned with spicy ancho chillies.
Island Time Music Festival
Each February, the Isla Mujeres acts as host to wide and eclectic range of musicians, as part of the Island Time Music Festival. With all proceeds going to local, underprivileged children, this is a celebration of music and culture that’s not to be missed.
Whale Shark Festival
The whale shark is an endangered species, but you’ll find plenty of them swimming around the reef of Isla Mujeres. For three days in July, the islanders celebrate the lives of these much-misunderstood gentle giants, with a festival of traditional dances, local food and works from local craftsmen. On top of that, there’s the chance for you to get involved in a variety of marine-based activities, including fishing, snorkelling, and watching these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Temperature: 23°C to 28°C

June is the hottest month, with the mercury hovering around 26°C on average, and highs of around 32°C. August is the best month if you want to enjoy the sea, with the ocean heating up to around 29°C.
