If you love a bit of adventure on your holidays, then lace up your hiking boots and climb Monte Epomeo. Lying in the heart of Ischia, you're in for a memorable experience with this exciting activity. From Ischia Porto it's just 20 minutes by road to the beautiful village of Fontana, with regular buses running the route. If you're feeling really fit and healthy, you can hike all the way from Ischia Porto to Monte Epomeo, which should take in the region of three hours each way.
Fontana is a lovely spot and well worth exploring. The village cascades down the hillside, and you'll have lovely views across the houses, vineyards and Tyrrhenian Sea below. After you've taken a few photos of the stunning churches and scenic farmland, it's time to make your way up Monte Epomeo. There's a path from Fontana that leads you just over two kilometres to the summit of the mountain, to a height of 789 metres. It should take you around 50 minutes to get to the top, so make sure you bring lots of water, particularly if it's a hot day. C
lose to the summit you'll come across the Cappella di San Nicola di Bari, a little 15th century church which has an adjoining hermitage. After a quick look around, finish your climb to the top of Monte Epomeo. The effort is more than worth it as you're greeted by breathtaking views, so don't forget to save some of your camera's battery.
Coming back down from the summit, grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink at La Grotta da Fiore with its spectacular vistas. Then head to Ischia's south coast and spend the rest of the day having a well-earned rest on Maronti Beach.
