The iconic Agora of Athens (sometimes referred to as the Classical Agora) is the most famous example of an Ancient Greek marketplace. This historic site served as a hub for commerce, civic assembly and communal living, offering you a fascinating window into the vibrant life of ancient Athens.
The Stoa (covered walkway) of Attalos, has been painstakingly restored and now houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora, where artefacts and exhibits offer a deeper insight into the daily life and culture of ancient Athens.
After viewing the museum’s exhibits, head up the steps to the top of Agoraios Kolonos hill. Here, you can see the awe-inspiring Temple of Hephaestus close up. It’s one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world and a lot more intact than the larger and more famous Parthenon.
Getting there:
The entrance to the Ancient Agora is roughly halfway between Thēseio and Monastiraki Metro stations - around 300m from either.
