Just 12km south of Athens city centre lies the chic town of Glyfada. The golden beach is a sun-soaked haven, inviting sunbathers and water enthusiasts to bask in its beauty. The town’s main landmark is the domed Saints Constantine and Helen Orthodox Cathedral. As you walk around you’ll discover designer stores, art galleries and a wide variety of places to eat. But the outstanding feature has to be the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, where you can learn about the work the charity does to rescue and rehabilitate injured sea reptiles. There’s limited opening hours, so check before visiting. While there’s no formal admission charge, donations and shop purchases help the charity in their quest to support sea turtles.
Getting there:
Glyfada is linked to central Athens by both bus and tram. The tram takes a slightly longer route but runs along the coast, giving a slower but more scenic journey. One of the tram stops is called Paralia Glyfadas. However, if you’re heading straight for the beach it’s best to alight at the stop before, while if you’re going to the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre the closest stop is the one after. Whether you choose the bus or the tram you’ll only need to purchase a standard price Athens ticket to get to Glyfada.
