The world’s shortest funicular in Zagreb

Close to the main square, a short walk along Ilica, you find the lower terminus of the Zagreb funicular railway. Opened in the 1890s, when it was steam-powered, this traditional transport whisks you from the urban bustle of the Lower Town to the tranquil cobbled streets of the Upper Town in just over a minute. The journey may be short, completed by two carriages every ten minutes, but the change of scenery and atmosphere is dramatic.

Once you arrive, having enjoyed the view of the carefully planned Lower Town with all its greenery, you’re on Strossmayerovo setaliste, arguably the prettiest promenade in town. Time it for noon, and the Gric Cannon blasts out from the Lotrscak Tower here, another 19th-century landmark.

The views from this lofty vantage point are unbeatable, with benches lining the walkway, and the occasional statue of a famous local character, ideal for selfies. In summer, this is the location for Strossmartre, the open-air festival of films and live performances, with cafes and stalls welcoming strolling visitors.
