Here’s what the doctor ordered
For severe and recurring heartbreak
Santorini
A little distance from the group chat might help. Stay in Imerovigli, high on the edge of the caldera, and walk down towards Fira with the sea below you and white houses packed into the hillside. Spend the afternoon by the pool, then find a terrace overlooking the volcanic islands for dinner. Heart still broken, perhaps. But at least you’re not discussing penalties.
For acute post-match devastation
Ibiza
Ibiza has a much quieter side when you need it. Leave the busiest resorts behind and spend the day swimming in rocky coves, eating lunch by the sea and doing very little else. Try the clear water around Cala Xarraca or head south-west to Cala d’Hort for views across to Es Vedrà. No post-match analysis required.
For chronic optimism disorder
Lisbon
Still thinking about what might have been? Dubai offers some very effective distractions. Spend the hottest part of the day by the pool, head out once the sun drops and swap scorelines for rooftop views, late dinners and a skyline that gives you plenty to look at.
For terminal footballing fatigue
Cape Verde
If the tournament has taken it out of you, Cape Verde makes a strong case for doing less. Stay All Inclusive on Sal, let breakfast roll into pool time and wander down to Santa Maria when you feel like stretching your legs. Stop in town for something to eat, then head back to the lounger.
Find a last-minute holiday that feels a long way from the final whistle.
