New trend: Brits take Norway by storm this autumn
Thomas Cook’s bookings soar by 800% year-on-year
Travellers are opting mainly for short-hauls
Couples account for 60% of all reservations
New data from online travel agency Thomas Cook reveals that bookings to Norway have soared by 800% year-on-year, a nine-fold increase that positions the Scandinavian country as a top destination this autumn. Tromsø, Oslo and Bergen are coming out on top.
This remarkable surge highlights a strong demand for short-haul city breaks, particularly among couples and holidaymakers without children, as the autumnal months arrive.
A significant 77% of travellers are opting for bed and breakfast accommodations, suggesting a preference for convenience and an authentic local experience.
Norway is proving to be the perfect spot for a romantic getaway too, with 60% of all bookings made by couples. The Northern Lights are visible over the autumnal period, providing a truly spectacular backdrop for a couples' escape.
Thomas Cook’s top sellers in Norway are:
- ● 4 star Scandic Holmenkollen Park
- ● 3 star Comfort Hotel Xpress Tromso
- ● 3 star Moxy Bergen
- ● 4 star Home Hotel Folketeateret
- ● 4 star Clarion Hotel The Hub
Nicholas Smith, Holidays Digital Director at Thomas Cook, commented on the findings:
"Traditionally, we see a shift towards long-haul bookings after the summer holidays, with empty nesters and couples seeking more distant getaways. We are pleasantly surprised by the immense popularity of Norway, with a nine-fold increase in bookings. This trend demonstrates that short-haul city breaks remain a top choice for travellers looking for an escape during the autumnal months."
