Worst ever trip
This was the most dirty place i ever stayed in. The bed sheets and towels are not changed. They had many animals in rooms such as cockroaches which are massive and did not want to do anything about it. Its so dirty that the room had animal remains in the corners Food is very poor quality and not eatable. Reception staff not helpful
Overall an enjoyable holiday but take note….
This is our review and notes relating to our one week stay at Qawra Palace Hotel in Malta in July/August 2022. Our party of 5 was made up of me and my wife our eldest son (20) and our 2 two other teenage boys. We hope it’s helpful for all. The Hotel Building The Hotel is around 40 years old. There are interesting photos in some of the corridors of the construction in it’s early stages dated 1980. The rooms themselves are modern and good internally with air con. The only UK TV is BBC news there is also a German music channel which the boys used. There is free wifi but coverage is hit and miss. We had a sea view room whilst the boys had a room facing the internal atrium. The outlook from these internal rooms is not great being very cramped and looking straight into the opposite apartments. It is quite claustrophobic and looks a bit of a mess with all the towels and other stuff on the balcony’s. One of the other guests we spoke to who had one of these rooms humorously likened it to staying in the Bronx!but this was probably a bit harsh. The sea view room we had was great although there is a main road between the hotel and the sea which isn’t readily evident from the brochure pictures. This means that the basement level which accesses the pool and the food hall are actually under the road. This is strange, but not a problem when you get used to it. You never hear the traffic in the food hall. The pool area is pleasant enough but showing it’s age in places. The pool is salt water. You have to be up early to get a sun bed overlooking the sea. There is also direct access from the pool area to the sea front. This isn’t beach but concrete jetties and other platforms that have been built over a long period of time. The locals frequent these areas on most days and the sea is accessible and warm and it’s nice to have a swim and snorkel in. Remember it can be very slippy under foot. It’s a bit annoying they shut the pool at 6 and make you feel uncomfortable from 5ish. This is so they can set up the tables and chairs for the evening entertainment. Overall I would say the building and pool are in good order but showing their age in places. Building Work. The hotel immediately next door is going through a major rebuild/renovation. This appears to involve adding several floors and a sea front swimming area and remodeling the rest. I would estimate that work will be ongoing for at least another 18 months maybe longer. We weren’t advised of adjacent building work before we arrived. The work was noisy at times and jack hammers are audible at various times of the day from the pool. There is also regular flow of concrete lorries in the road. Another guest we spoke to had an apartment on that side of the hotel and said it had not been pleasant and they couldn’t use the balcony due to the workers on the scaffolding opposite looking in. It was also noisy for them as they were directly adjacent the working area. When we checked in I mentioned to reception that we wanted a room at the other end from the building work. They said the work had stopped for the summer but this was patently not the case. We did actually get a room at the other end of the hotel so had no problem with noise other than the car horns they love to blow on the road outside. The hotel itself also has construction work ongoing with a new 9 and 10th floor being constructed (nearing completion) There was a bit of noise from this in the early part of our stay but this did not seem to be a general problem although we were on the 5th floor so several floors between us and the construction. All inclusive You have to find your own way with the all inclusive it’s not clearly explained anywhere or when you check in. Firstly it does not cover the coffee shop/restaurant in the front foyer. This was not clear when we booked and was disappointing after an embarrassing debate with the serving staff. There is one restaurant/eating hall/bar in the basement and a pool bar by the pool. Drinks You can have local beer (the pumps are badged as Stella Artois but it isn’t Stella - but is drinkable) local wine (glasses or carafe - this is just about drinkable - Prosecco is not covered by the all inclusive which was disappointing for my wife) and local versions of spirits (not branded) so a Bacardi and coke is a white rum and coke etc etc. Overall the drinks provision is ok but my wife was fed up with the offerings by the end of the week and I didn’t really enjoy a pint at the hotel the whole time we were there. The boys did however enjoy the free soft drinks, slush and ice cream at the pool bar. Food Breakfast is served in the restaurant from 7.30 until 9.45am. There is traditional English breakfast available which is ok (they never quite get it right outside the UK). There is also fruit and continental breakfast and pastries. Breakfast is pretty good overall and the boys loved all that was on offer. Lunch is served in the restaurant from 12 till 2pm which consists of various hot dishes, fruit, cheese etc drinks can be obtained from the restaurant bar as described above. Overall lunch in the restaurant is ok. You can also get sandwiches, crisps, pies, cake and ice cream at the pool bar all free on all inclusive. They also do a decent tuna cob with salad which are kept in the drawer marked with a “5” behind the bar . Evening meals are served in the restaurant between 5.30 and 8.30. There is a similar mix to lunch with some extra meat dishes. The best bit is the meat on the bone which is served carvery style but this isn’t on every night. Overall the evening meals are ok albeit a bit monotonous. The boys enjoyed the quantity and we all ate too much. Warning: if you are leaving the hotel any later than 11am on your day of departure your all inclusive will not be valid after 11am. We met people who had evening flights who could not use the bar or restaurant for the day. Have this in mind. Guests There is a mix of nationalities at the hotel. Any Brit who has been abroad knows the situation with this especially around the pool. The disappointing thing here was the number of exchange students that were resident in the hotel. Busses arrived and left on a daily basis full of “students”. These students were all from European countries not UK. The hotel felt a bit like a youth club at times due to number of kids. Some of the facilities (pool and jacuzzi) were clogged with these kids from time to time and some didn’t know how to behave. Staff. A bit of a mixed bag really. Generally all were polite and hard working. People that stick out we’re the older gent that serves at the restaurant bar on an evening who is old school and a proper pro. The bald restaurant manager who appears to be shouting at people but who is actually a helpful nice guy and in contrast to these the tattooed pool bar manager who is generally gruff and rude to guests and staff alike and could do with a course in customer service and staff management or maybe a career change. You will recognize who I mean if you ever go. Facilities Other facilities to the pool are jacuzzi and indoor pool area which looks nice but we didn’t use. The boys wanted to mention the games room which they enjoyed. €2 euro for pool. There is nice we’ll stocked gift shop on site and the coffee shop/restaurant in the foyer (not included in all inclusive). There is also a mini putting green in the atrium but it looked only suitable for small kids. Entertainment There is evening entertainment every evening in the pool area. These were singers/bands of various types. Unfortunately with one of two exceptions these were pretty poor and a lot of people played cards to fill the time. Maybe a few games of bingo, more variety of act and some audience participation could be considered to improve the situation. Location The hotel is about 35 mins from the airport by car. Allow at least an hour on the way back especially if you have to get petrol. The hotel itself is on the seafront with a few little shops adjacent. The resort sprawls out behind the hotel and you reach it by turning left out of hotel main doors and the first left up a hill. There are the usual bars and restaurants and the car museum is just up on the right. The resort then goes on for what seems like miles but is a consistent mix of bars, restaurants and convenience stores. If you turn left out the hotel and walk straight up the seafront you will come to the Cafe Del Mar which has a Ibiza style pool party on a Thursday night (entrance €20 min age 17) there is also an aquarium just a little further up. Generally the sea front area is well frequented by the locals who use the arches under the road for beach hut style storage. Temperature It was generally mid 30’s when we were there. Nights are also warm and air con is essential. The staff said it would be up to 40 degrees in August and then be humid in September. Cleanliness The hotel was very clean and cleaned regularly. Beds were made every day and rooms tidied up. My wife was very impressed with this. It was a shame that a huge cockroach decided to walk across reception when we checked in but this was an isolated instance and we have concluded was just unlucky. Summary You get what you pay for at the end of the day. The hotel overall was ok to good but we concluded that the hotel was not a 4 star but more like a 3 star. You need to consider carefully which type of rooms you book. The food was abundant and was generally ok to good. More variety at evening meals would be a benefit. The drinks were plentiful but the quality was questionable. The rooms adjacent major building work could seriously impact on your stay and this should be declared when booking. Rooms other than sea view have an internal view which I have described above. We would consider going again but not in high season. The locals recommend May and October. All in all we enjoyed our break and out of ten we give the Qawra Palace Hotel 7 out of 10.
