Tuscany - currency

Italy uses the euro (EUR), symbolised by €, and it’s available in notes and coins. Most restaurants, cafés, hotels and larger shops across Tuscany accept credit and debit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. That said, cash still matters, especially in smaller towns, rural areas, markets and family-run trattorias.

💶 Euro notes come in €5, €10, €20, €50, €100 and €200. It’s best to carry smaller notes — €10s and €20s are ideal for cafés, buses and casual meals, while €50s are useful for hotels or larger restaurant bills.

🪙 Euro coins range from 1 cent to €2. These are handy for bakeries, coffee bars, public toilets, markets and tipping small change. Tipping isn’t expected in Tuscany, but rounding up or leaving a few euros for good service is appreciated.

🏧 ATMs (called “bancomat”) are widely available in towns and cities and usually accept international cards like Visa and Mastercard. For the best exchange rate, withdraw in euros rather than pounds. Daily withdrawal limits vary by bank. It’s also a good idea to let your bank know you’re travelling to avoid card blocks.

🍝 Budget tip: Lunch menus (menu del giorno) are common and good value, often offering pasta, a main and coffee for less than dinner prices. Bakeries and food counters are also an easy way to keep costs down while eating well.
