Explore moreThe Amalfi coast is one of Italy's jewels, and Amalfi itself is a real highlight you won't want to miss. Amalfi walks and tours are a wonderful way to delve into the heart of this beautiful town. There is charm around every corner, a spectacular coast, exquisite food, and plenty of that authentic Italian glamour. We want to help you explore beyond what the day-trippers see, with our introduction to Amalfi walks and Amalfi tours.
Amalfi Walks
An easy walk to enjoy is the Via delle Signore footpath from Amalfi to Atrani. This mostly level walk takes around 25 minutes along the coast. A few hours in Atrani, perhaps visiting Santuario Santa Maria del Bando to gaze down at the views, is a delightful way to spend an afternoon or morning.
If you fancy something more challenging, walking to Ravello through the lemon groves is a heavenly way to enjoy this unique coast. The walk is uphill and takes about three hours. On reaching Ravello you are richly rewarded with breath-taking views of the Tyrrhenian sea, elegant villas, and a simple cathedral. There are plenty of choices for an indulgent lunch al fresco lunch before making your way back down to Amalfi.
If you'd like an easier option, then it's possible to get the Sita bus to Ravello, then walk back via Atrani.
Amalfi is also an access point for the legendary Walk of the Gods. This all-day hike is world famous for its views over the Amalfi coast and the island of Capri. Take the Sita bus to Bomerano, and follow the pathway to Positano via Nocelle. Return to Amalfi by bus or boat.
Prepare for Amalfi walks or hikes by ensuring you've got the best clothing and footwear, as well as enough water. We don't recommend you undertake long hikes in the peak of summer, as the temperatures can be surprisingly high.
Amalfi Tours
A fascinating few hours can be spent exploring Valle dei Mulini. You can see the mills that kept Amalfi's paper industry running, and visit Musea della Carta to see how the paper is made and to buy a unique souvenir.
One of our favourite Amalfi Tours takes in Piazza Flavio Gioia (named after the reputed inventor of the compass) and Piazza Duomo with its magnificent 13th-century cathedral before moving past the fountain of S. Andrea, through Porta della Marina. This tour gives a great overview of Amalfi's maritime significance and is a chance to spend time exploring the historical buildings attached to the cathedral.
If you fancy resting your feet, then the Grotto dello Smeraldo, discovered in 1932, is easily reached by boat. Take this trip along the coast to see a grotto filled with an array of colours from cobalt to turquoise, intriguing stalactites, and a unique underwater Vietrian crib.
Staying in Amalfi gives you a chance to do what the day trippers miss and spend time simply wandering the network of streets and alleys, searching out the perfect spot for a limoncello or enjoying people watching over a latte on Piazza delle Duomo. However you want to spend your time, we'll help you find the ideal Amalfi walks or Amalfi tours, as well as the ideal place to relax and soak up the atmosphere of this magical town.
