Trinity College

Step back in time to the 18th century as you explore Trinity College. Sitting right in the centre of Dublin and founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592, the prestigious university is open for public visits, and it’s a great way to spend a few hours on your trip to the Irish capital.

To make the most of your visit to the college, take a student-led walking tour around the grounds, starting at the Front Gate and taking in the most important sights on the campus. Find out more about the history of Trinity College over the years, including famous alumni such as Jonathan Swift and Samuel Beckett.

Walking through the main gates, you’ll come out onto a cobbled square surrounded by centuries-old buildings and statues. Next to it you’ll see Library Square, which is home to the Douglas Hyde Gallery with its contemporary art. Go inside to see exhibitions by artists from across the globe. Visit the interactive exhibitions at the Science Gallery and relax with a coffee in the café before going to see the university’s most treasured item, the Book of Kells.

To see the medieval manuscript, an ornate, illustrated edition of the New Testament dating back to the 9th century, you’ll need to buy a ticket for the exhibition either online or at the college ticket desk. The Book of Kells is housed in the Long Hall, a beautiful old library with books stretching from floor to ceiling. See the original book and look at replicas of each and every page in this fascinating exhibit.
