Look forward to sipping some local wines when you pay a visit to the Gaia Winery. Just a couple of kilometres north up the coast from the centre of Kamari, it's a great way to spend an afternoon on your holiday to Santorini.
Established in 1994, Gaia quickly became popular within the Greek wine industry, and aims to show off the potential of local grape varieties to the worldwide market. The winery is open for tours between May and October, ideal if you're going on holiday to Kamari over the summer.
Arriving at the winery, you'll be amazed at the incredible beachside location. Just steps from the black volcanic shingly sand, There are outdoor tables under a canopy where you can look forward to sampling the fruits of Gaia's labour. Before tasting the wines though, enter the winery's historic building, which used to be a factory where local cherry tomatoes were turned into an aromatic tomato puree. Gaia transformed their premises with modern equipment, while preserving the heritage of the former factory.
Stepping inside the winery, you'll be given the tour of the winemaking facilities, and see where the casks are stored once they're ready for ageing. You'll even get to visit a small vault where Gaia produce a small amount of rare vinegar, which is aged for five years in oak barrels before it's bottled.
After you've learnt about the processes involved, head back out into the sunshine and take a seat with views across the sparkling Aegean Sea. You'll be given a selection of wines to sample, experiencing how Santorini's volcanic soil and sunshine affects the taste.
After you've enjoyed your wine, walk back along the coast for half an hour and spend the rest of the day relaxing on Kamari Beach.
