Seen as an inspirational symbol of freedom for the island of Crete, the monastery is thought to date back to the 5th century AD and rose to international fame during the Cretan revolution. Seeing the monastery is a must, not just for the astonishingly well-preserved buildings and the interesting on-site museum, but also to learn the fascinating history of what went on within the olive coloured walls.
