Best places to go snorkelling in Tenerife
Many call the snorkelling in Tenerife the 'must do' activity of any trip to the Canary Islands. That's probably because of the serene turquoise waters, warm seas and, of course, a brilliant variety of sea life. It's without a doubt one of the most incredible places to enjoy the activity.
You're given a chance to dive into clear blue waters and explore an undersea world of mysteries just waiting to be discovered. You'll swim down and find amazing coral reefs, inhabited by a host of fascinating marine life, and much more. You can spot the graceful and beautiful sea turtles in their natural habitat, watch schools of fish dart and dash through the calm ocean and perhaps even spot curious dolphins swimming in the distance.
In the busy currents, it's common to spot the shoals of fish, especially some of the larger species. While in the calmer areas, it's the place to spot starfish, seahorses and crustaceans.
But where is best to go snorkelling in Tenerife?
There are a few fantastic places to start your Tenerife snorkelling adventure. Many parts of the Costa Adeje district, set against the idyllic El Barranco reserve, are perfect to take your first look into the waters. It's got a great variety of creatures to spot, as well as sea plants and volcanic rock formations.
15 minutes up the road, there's El Puertito or 'The Little Port', a rocky reef that's the ideal place to spot the elusive sea turtles. These waters serve as feeding ground for the hard shelled reptiles, and so it's a chance to spot them not just swimming, but diving, eating and frolicking together.
Abades is a more natural and secluded location, catering for those looking for a quieter experience above the waves. Below the waves though, things are as busy as you'd want, with the calm waters acting as a hideaway for seahorses and schools of tropical fish.
Radazul is more family focused, so it's ideal for travelling with kids. They'll be spoilt for choice when spotting starfish and crabs in around the walls and deeper areas of this seaport.
Another fantastic family diving resort is Puerto Colon. A popular beach, you can try and catch a glimpse in the tides of the sand, or head up to B.O.B scooter centre, and dive deeper on these high-tech machines. With an hour of air in each device, you'll be able to explore the deep-sea bed and hopefully spot the small angel sharks and incredible manta rays.
For the deep divers and brave snorkelers, off the coast of Adeje, the Twin wrecks are the most unique snorkelling location in Tenerife. Here you can find the remains of two ships that after sinking has become the perfect habitat for garden eels, two-banded bream and trumpet fish.
But don't worry about being too picky about your Tenerife snorkelling location. The most important thing is your own curiosity. The island has a variety of amazing beaches and sea locations, so wherever you find yourself, it's worth donning your snorkel and mask and taking a peek at what lies below the surface.
