What’s the weather like in Crete in October?

Sitting in the southern Aegean, you'll get lots of warm weather if you’re going on your Crete holidays in October. It’s the largest Greek island, and has the hottest weather across the whole country because of its location close to North Africa.

Microclimates

The mountains that run across the middle of Crete from east to west give the island two distinct microclimates. They act as a barrier to north westerly winds, meaning the south looks more North African compared to the north’s Mediterranean feel. The south is hotter and drier, although you'll get pleasant humidity levels all around the coast because of cool breezes. It’s also warmer on the coast than in the mountains, which can get snow over winter.

Averages

The average high temperature in October is 24ºC, so you won’t need much more than your beach gear, shorts and t-shirts. You should pack a few warmer things for the evenings, as it’s still pleasant but temperatures fall to around 15ºC at night. The sea temperature can be expected to be 23ºC at this time of year, while humidity is low and ranges from around 50% to 80%. Rain starts to pick up a bit after the dry summer, but it’s still low at an average of 40mm over six rainy days.

Daylight

During October you can expect 11 hours of daylight with six hours of sunshine each day. Bring plenty of sun cream as UV levels will still be moderate, while sunset’s just after 7pm at the start of the month, and gradually gets earlier before the end of daylight saving take another hour off this.
