Jameos Del Agua
One of Lanzarote's most impressive attractions, the Jameos del Agua cave system is technically a nightlife venue, although it could easily be described as a huge natural work of art!
Invented by one of Lanzarote's great icons
The Jameos del Agua was pioneered by Cesar Manrique, a Lanzarote born artist and architect who utilised the island's special volcanic landscape to create this unique attraction. Cesar wanted to create a special cultural attraction, which combined art with nature, and in 1968 his idea became a reality. The site forms part of a 6km long lava tube (don't worry, there's no lava in it anymore!), which is estimated to date back four millennia and was a channel for lava travelling to the Atlantic Ocean. When pressure built up, parts of the ground collapsed, leaving the open air caves that you can visit today.
What to see at Jameos del Agua
Once you arrive, you'll need to climb down a stone staircase to reach Jameo Chico, the first cave, so wear comfortable shoes. The cave has a restaurant, bar and scenic views of a small crystal-clear lake. Then you'll get to Jameo Grande, a vast open-air cave with an amazing swimming pool overlooked by tropical plants. Sadly, visitors are not permitted to swim in the pool, although apparently a special exception applies to the King of Spain!
The House of the Volcanoes
See La Casa de los Volcanoes (House of the Volcanoes), a beautiful avant-garde style building where you can learn more about Lanzarote's volcanic history. Or book tickets to watch a concert at the auditorium, which is overlooked by the dramatic rock formations and is famous for its high-quality acoustics.
Relax and unwind at the bar and restaurant, where you can enjoy superb food and drink, or head here in the evening for some great music and plenty of dancing. Cesar Manrique himself called Jameos del Agua 'the most beautiful nightclub in the world' and while it may not be a nightclub in the conventional sense, the atmosphere here after dark is nothing short of sensational.
How to get to Jameos del Agua
If you're staying in the Costa Teguise area, Jameos del Agua is easily reachable by car via the LZ-1 in about 25 minutes. From Puerto del Carmen, it's about a 35 to 40 minute drive, or approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Playa Blanca. If you're not hiring a car on your Lanzarote holiday, don't worry, because you can also take bus number 9 to Jameos del Agua from Punta Mujeres, Teguise or Arrecife, although check schedules before you set off, as online timetables may not always be up-to-date.
Other practical information
Jameos del Agua is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am-5pm and again from 7pm-12pm. There is an admission charge, although you'll find it's more than worth it, especially if you come in the evening.
