Surely It must be one of the best Egyptian holidays we made and we’ve made close to 30. Yes, there are certain defects, but in our experience, nothing is perfect in Egypt. Except for weather and the reef. The hotel is not new, to be sure, but it has aged well and has been undergoing extensive renovation as we speak. The lobby in nice, fairly simplistic in style, could do with a bit more air-conditioning. Staff including receptionists, waiters, gardeners, cleaners etc. are for the most part exceedingly polite and helpful. „Giving five” is not my style though. Their English is pretty basic. The hotel seems to have been geared mostly to German guests, so the staff seems to have a better grasp of German, than English. No matter, I had no problems. Just don’t expect to discuss philosophy. ElGouna is an entirely new complex of hotels, private villas of various sizes, marinas, restaurants, discos, apartments and shops supposedly resembling Mediterranean resorts with moderate success. A lot of effort went into creating artificial lagunas, canals, islets, all interconnected and covered by vegetation. It’s not dissimilar to Palm Island in Dubai, though perhaps more modest. You get the gist? Similarly, Sheraton is situated on a few artificial islets with bridges connecting then together, which creates a charming result. Consequently, there is plenty of water to enjoy. The gardens are quite mature and have been formed by exotic trees, palms, bushes and succulents trimmed ruthlessly to no good reason as far as I am concerned. There is hardly any grass, which perhaps wouldn’t be a good idea in half desert conditions anyway. We spotted some falcons, crows, sparrow, doves, egrets and other seabirds and even a glimpse of a colorful bee-eater. Not many insects though probably on account of strong winds and insecticides used to kill mosquitos. With no wind, the mosquitoes do bite. Or maybe it’s some other miniscule flies, which do not respond to mosquito repellent? Learn to appreciate the wind, which blows them away. The room we booked was „deluxe beach front” on the top, second floor and had a most wonderful barrel-vaulted ceiling. We paid a bit more but it was worth it. It was spacious, clean and inviting. Had a modest size TV, powerful hairdryer, minifridge restocked regularly with soft drinks and a dilapidated kettle. Lights and air-conditioning were operated by a modern, electronic, touch screen but rather fiddly system. From the balcony the view extended onto a mangrove sandbank full of little, colourful crabs. Great place for walking and wading. In the shallows colorful kite surfers did their acrobatics while beyond sailing boats and motor yachts traveled to and fro taking quests to the reef. Be warned though, the Red Sea was not yet warm enough for snorkeling without a wetsuit; swimming – perhaps ok. The downside of the ongoing renovation was a little bit of noise, mostly drowned by the hum of air-conditioning. Banging at 8.30am was unacceptable though, so we complained. It is all going to be spectacular, when finished. Hope to be still able to afford it then. There are two a la carte restaurants: Italian La Piscina and Oriental Orient1001 and a spacious Miramar part self-service, part waiter service next to the lobby. That’s where you have your all-inclusive breakfast, lunch and dinner. A la carte is free once a week. We went to the Orient 1001 once. The staff was exceedingly polite, food abundant but not particularly inspiring. All in all, a rather pleasant experience in very nice surroundings, but we never went there again and skipped the Italian all together. Italian cuisine in Egypt? I think not. Drinks and wines on all-inclusive were passable, the food – better than average in Egypt. Chinese night is particularly good, we thought. So long as you added enough spices to the otherwise blunt food. If you- like us- are fond of coffee, be warned. Like in many Egyptian hotel bars they will offer you nescafe. You have to be quite specific and point your finger to the proper coffeemaker and ideally watch them make it or else you will end up with the trash. Don’t trust waiters in that respect. Entertainment- I can’t comment much. There was some form of singing or music playing after dinner on the terrace by the lobby. On one occasion the singer was definitely out of tune which she insisted on advertising all over the hotel. Lunches we often chose to have on the beach, where I can recommend chicken wrap, delicious. Or by the pool, served from the Italian restaurant and can be delivered to your sunbed. Beef burgers were rather good at both. If it’s food you are after for lunch, Miramar is best. The beach is literary all around you, meaning around the banks. It’s rather narrow, sandy, with plenty of sunbeds with mattresses, wind breaks and parasols. Towels are free and you can leave them behind at the end of the day. „Prime locations” tend to be reserved by the early rising Germans. There is a veeery long jetty from a public beach across a small bridge from the hotel. Good for a walk. From the end of it you could try some snorkeling but again I can’t comment as never tried it myself. Besides the hotel beach there are also two supposedly heated pools. One irregular in shape but rather large and another – square and small. There are also two puddles for little children. On the beaches- both hotel and public you can book kitesurfing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boat trips, glass bottom boats, etc. One hour has risen up to 25€per hour but I am sure is negotiable. You can also rent a bicycle as the hotel grounds are quite spacious as well as kayaks and pedalos. On the whole we loved it. Dolce far niente. Don’t forget to tip at every opportunity. 1-2€ should do in most circumstances. Exchanging your cash /card into Egyptian Pounds doesn’t make sense as the ATM machine will give you large notes which you have to change again into small pieces for tipping anyway. Reception doesn’t run exchange any longer. Bring sone coins with you, then change 5,10 € notes into the coins later at the reception/bar. Porters and waiters are also willing to help you in this predicament as ultimately it is them, who benefit. No sweat. Enjoy!
Gorgeous resort with great service and excellent food options
Stayed here for 2 days right after New Years 2023. Resort is part of a gated community off the highway which is very safe and pretty. Check-in was a little chaotic but after some misses, we were greeted by Omar, director of guest relations, which was very lucky! He helped to get us a wonderful upgrade, (we had 2 rooms connecting, one a 2 story suite; both rooms were recently refurbished, absolutely gorgeous and right on the beach.), arranged for us to have drinks and appetizers on the Wine boat, and helped us procure reservations at Oriental 1001 (it's a small restaurant and always booked). The Wine Boat was a highlight-incredible ambience and service in a unique setting. The main bar was also very fun with live music and quite a few people for a weeknight. Oriental 1001 was spectacular-the homemade bread in the outdoor oven, the welcome drinks and tea-the food, ambience and service were outstanding. Quite possibly the best meal we had in Egypt! Also went to the buffet for breakfast and to-go dinner (thank you to the staff who gave us to-go boxes and made that happen!). Didn't use the pools, etc. but they all looked wonderful. Would definitely stay here again when on the coast.
Great hotel and service
If you want to spend your holiday in El Gouna, Sheraton is probably the best choice. The location is excellent, with only a few minutes‘ walk from Zeytuna Beach and a few minutes by tuk tuk both from Downtown El Gouna and from the Marina. The resort is beautiful, with palm trees and shade everywhere. The pool is nice and clean. We didn‘t take the all inclusive option because we wanted to have more dinner options, but we did try the Orient restaurant and it was nice. We stayed in the 2000 block by the sea and the rooms were very spacious, comfortable and had a good size terrace. The location by the sea was even nicer because there was always a breeze and a nice view. Very polite and friendly service as well, especially from Mona from reception and from Mina and Ahmed from the beach bar and restaurant. All in all, we had a very nice time and absolutely recommend it!
