minimalist hotel in fabulous location

minimalist hotel w great hotel restaurant options (Comodo- absolutely delish, and Smiles to go- takeaway or eat-in quick spot). note the bathroom is small w tiny sink as with many nyc hotels. also there's no fan in the bathroom. the room size is comparable for nyc. poor lighting in the room. note there's a rooftop bar that turns into a club late night so would stay on a lower floor farther from elevators. convenient location.

Beneath a veneer of elegance, a Pandora's box of pain

Pros: - Good location: close to the subway, a lot within walking distance, easy to hail a cab, safe and clean by current NYC standards. - Elegant exterior and lobby. - Some of the staff was courteous and professional (though see below). - The room, while small, was well-appointed and very clean. Cons (in order from least to most infuriating): - The room lacked some standard amenities. In particular, cups or glasses of any kind. - I booked two rooms through Hotels.com, but they had no information in their system tying the two rooms to the same person, and it didn't occur to them to ask. Took a while to sort out. - The clerk who checked us in was the epitome of snooty NYC attitude without any of NYC speed or efficiency. I grew up in NYC, so I feel that I can say that. I don't expect Southern charm or anything, but he exuded contempt at every turn. If you're listening, Freehand, this was Saturday, 4/22/23, around 10:30 p.m. - The rooms are EXTREMELY noisy. The walls are paper-thin. Worse, though: in a fourth-floor room overlooking Lexington Ave., the traffic and crowd noise was deafening pretty much the entire night. I get that this is NYC, and I should not expect complete serenity, but this was absurd. Not being able to get ANY sleep defeats the purpose of a hotel room. Our friends staying in a room at the opposite end of the fourth floor were kept awake by some kind of mechanical machine noise all night, which was no better. Other Notes: If you're looking for an evening cocktail at the hotel, avoid the Calico Bar. It bills itself as a "craft cocktail bar," but is nothing of the sort. It is an integral part of the Georgia Room nightclub. The music is deafening, the gauntlet one must run to get inside is humiliating, the crowd is extremely night-clubby, and the vibe is the opposite of relaxing. The website makes it sound as if the bar and the nightclub are two separate establishments, but they are not. If you want a good cocktail in a chill atmosphere, go downstairs to the Comodo, the hotel's restaurant. That's what we did and had a great time.

Great hotel, great stay, less of a hostel

I found this place on hostelworld, so thought it would cater more to that market, concious that isnt a big scene in the US. HOWEVER, i had a private room, so as a hotel, i thought this place was great, great sized room, clean, comfortable, changed daily and a really good location in manhatten, minutes from the subway. As a solo traveller, wasnt that great, no communal areas that werent the bars/restaurant that i could find anyway. No events or things for solo travellers to meet and do that you'd see at other hostel. But overall a very good stay and would do so again.
