A wonderful 10 days at Alvor Baia

We're just back from a wonderful 10 days in Alvor staying at Alvor Baia. I wanted to try and give as detailed of a review as possible for anyone looking at going. For context we paid £1900 for a family of two adults and two children aged 6 and 18 months. Arrival - from Faro airport this hotel was the last stop on our coach transfer. We travelled with Jet2 and it was a very comfortable, modern, air conditioned coach. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by staff who took our bags in and then took them up to our room for us. First impressions were brilliant. The hotel looks very modern and very impressive on arrival. Rooms - our room was a suite with an inland view. For us this was preferable to a pool view, with two young kids some of the entertainment in the evening would have been quite loud and likely disturbed their sleep. The room has a double bed then a couch and a single bed the other side of a partition wall which has a flat screen TV on either side. There was a large balcony with a table and two chairs. There is a kitchenette with a sink, fridge, microwave and small electric hob. There is air conditioning as well. We took a mosquito plug in but never even had to plug it in. The rooms were very clean and all of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Pool - as people have said the main pool is very cold but you very quickly become used to it. The kids paddling pool is a little warmer. Our 6 year old was in swim shorts the whole time and never once complained about the temperature. For the toddler we got a little wetsuit before going. The pool is very large and when we went (May) there were plenty of sun beds. Food/drink - Breakfast was full english fry up options plus fresh bread, pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereal, pancakes, occasionally waffles. Lunch - there was soup, a salad bar, an array of grilled meats and fish, pasta and rice. They also had a chicken shwarma/kebab every day. Dinner - was varied for us the best nights by far were the BBQ nights. Snacks - in the morning after breakfast there was fresh fruit, pastries, some cakes and usually left over breakfast cooked items. In the afternoon hot dogs, burgers, fruit, cakes and ice cream. Drinks - the soft drinks are Coca Cola, Coke Zero, Sprite, Orange Fanta, Peach/Lemon ice tea, they have coffee machines, cocktail machines, Super Bock on draught, Super Bock 0%, white, red, rose wine, then all the spirits you can imagine. The quality of the drinks was fantastic and we never had to wait longer than about 1 minute regularly not having to wait at all. Entertainment - during the day there is a kids club which you can see from the kids pool area, theres daily activities and a kids mini disco every evening at 8.30pm which our son loved. Other nights were things such as karaoke, quizzes, a magician, a show with singing/dancing from movies. Overall we enjoyed it. We didnt stay down later than 10.30pm because of the kids but it was plenty for us. Local area/amenities- there is a shop in the lobby of the hotel selling souvenirs and also basics like snacks etc. The snacks etc are all reasonably priced and very handy especially with young kids. The souvenirs are largely all rubbish and overpriced but its not really an issue. There is a large supermarket about 10 minutes walk away and another smaller one on the walk down into Alvor town which is maybe a 15-20 minute walk even for us with a pushchair and a 6 year old. Alvor town itself is quite small but had a lot of nice looking restaurants as well as the usual ice cream shops, bars and souvenir shops. You can also book different boat trips and excursions from the bottom of the town. Everything was very reasonably priced. Our package included 3 trips to the local waterpark Slide and Splash. The bus picks you up from around the corner from the hotel and takes about 25 minutes then takes you back at 4pm. The waterpark was brilliant and due to the time of year we went there were no queues for anything which was a huge bonus. Weather wise it was sunny and dry every day between 23 and 26 degrees. The only criticism I would have whatsoever is the food. The options for kids were very hit and miss. One day had all the kids favourites pizza, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, chips. Then the next day there would be next to nothing they would eat but that may be more to do with our 6 year old being quite fussy. Overall we had a fantastic time and would definitely like to go back to Alvor and stay at Alvor Baia again.

We (2 adults and 2 young kids) recently stayed here for the first time and overall had a good time. I will start with the pros: The staff are so friendly and welcoming, especially the bar staff! The hotel is super clean, I mean I saw no mess… there is always a member of staff cleaning up, including in the dinner hall. The rooms are very modern and again so clean… unfortunately we spent a lot of time in our hotel room as our children got sick for half of our holiday, which I think was down to heat stroke not to do with the food I should add. There was always sun loungers (I know Brits get hung up on this). Free shuttle bus to the beach… which I suggest having a trip to as they have some amazing picturesque caves! Great Coffee machine! Important to me… I need a caffeine fix regularly!! My daughter loved the playground. BBQ theme night was great and the lemon cake is the best I’ve tasted!! The alcohol measures… my goodness you get your moneys worth with this! The outside bar staff give you 80% alcohol 20% mixer. I’m not a big drinker so did not need many drinks! Convenience shop was handy and not too pricey. Cons: The food was quite repetitive which I didn’t mind so much as I like meat and salad. However my two fussy eaters started the week living off of chips as they said the children’s food tasted strange! Which they weren’t wrong… pizza and fish fillets were awful. And because they were poorly they couldn’t face anything from the food court for the second half of our holiday so we had to buy food in from the local supermarket (which I should add isn’t the hotels fault). The all inclusive restaurant was open mostly throughout the day but for the times it wasn’t open, they served food in a snack bar… which looked to us like left overs from the all inclusive so we didn’t really use the bar. The entertainment was basically none existing. Which was a shame as I think the kids would of enjoyed more entertainment. They have a kids club in a hut next to the playground but it never looked to be open! Occasionally they did a quiz and had a trumpet player one of the evenings… which was nice to listen to. Lastly the biggest disappointment for us was the pool! When I read past reviews about the pool being cold. I took this with a pinch of salt as a Brit that will go swimming in our sea often. The reviews weren’t wrong it was so so cold. The longest me and the kids got in was for about 20 mins. I think because it is such a big pool, stretching around the hotel. That it is hard to warm up, even on very hot days! Overall I think the hotel would be better aimed at couples or friends wanting a relaxing holiday, which advertised on Jet2 as a family favourite, I had high hopes on this being child friendly!

My view on this hotel is from a glass half full outlook as opposed to a jaundiced one Firstly to correct a recent reviewing glaring error, there are 3 bars, 2 of which are AI, also apart from the 4 main lifts there is a fifth lift, which gives immediate access to the gardens and pool, go and look. Hotel is large , clean modern and kept very clean, all staff I engaged with were friendly, perhaps negative comments about staff are a mirror reflection of the reviewer. Always found something to eat, then I am not a picky person, as for allergen signs they were there if u wanted to read them. Drinks at the Pool bar and the Grand bar downstairs were varied and once again had no problem finding numerous options dependent on time of day. All of the rooms appear to follow the same generous size design, for what we paid for 2 weeks great value. Overall a good quality hotel, with great staff and service, would not hesitate to revisit.
