Pleasurable stay in the midst of chaos.
There are many comments about the flaws in this hotel. Yes, it is worn out, and in another week it will be closed for renovation. It's time. It was also a bit disconcerting to have the reno going on around us, but I will focus on the positives. The room was large if a bit empty, the bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. The breakfast buffet was very good with many choices. The bar/restaurant was very nice and the food well prepared. The location is excellent. Close to the major museums, easy walk to major tram hub, located across from a pretty park. Couldn't be better. The best part, though, was the staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful, despite being under the stress of the renovation. We learned that not everyone will be employed while the hotel is closed for the next three months. It can't be easy for those who work there. Having stayed at NH hotels before I know they are business class hotels that often host tour groups. They are generally functional and accommodating, not fancy but always reliable. We will be happy to stay at NH Amsterdam Centre again and look forward to seeing the remodeled rooms on our next visit to Amsterdam. Thank you for such a nice visit.
Great Location...but never a 4 star in it's current state
Great position, lovely staff but some work needed on the building. Building works starting at 7am each morning, no warning notices. Shower had little pressure mainly as the 'lead' to the shower head didn't fit properly...it also fell off in your hand if you tried to adjust it. However, good breakfast selection and really well organised. For €200+ per night (booked well in advance) it's currently not great value
The first 24 hours are the hardest
We were booked for a one night stay prior to our river cruise by AMA Waterways. The hotel had been changed from when we had originally booked the cruise. Our transfer from the airport to the hotel had not been a good experience, so I was hoping the hotel reviews I had read prior to our departure were off the mark. Unfortunately, they were spot on. The location of the hotel is on a busy street and our driver dumped us at the curb and sped off. I did not see any bellhops to help with luggage; we were pretty exhausted, so we struggled to drag our bags up the ramp/steps at the entrance where too many people were standing smoking cigarettes. We were assisted right away at check-in. The desk clerk said we had a room reserved for each of us--which we did not need. She kept insisting that maybe we did and that we should check with AMA. Fortunately, only one of the rooms was clean/ready so that is the one she gave us. It was the only pleasant surprise to be able to get in our room right away. I expected to have to give a credit card for incidentals, but I did not expect to be charged immediately for 26 Euros in taxes. I am following up with AMA on that matter. After we took the single small elevator to the second floor, dragging our bags along with us, we found our room close by. It was roomy, but the furnishings were worn and badly in need of updating. The room was quite warm and the thermostat did not seem to do much to change that when we tried adjusting it. The windows cannot be opened. We were exhausted, so we undressed and tried to sleep a bit, but the bed was so hard, I was more comfortable sleeping on top of the duvet. I wished I had a sheet to cover me, but knew that is not the norm in Europe. I could hear anyone who passed by in the hallway, but luckily most were quiet. The location of the hotel was fairly close to the museum plein, but we had not made any reservations to visit them. We had a canal tour scheduled as part of our cruise itinerary (as well as an opportunity to visit the Keukenhof), so we simply went to dinner at a restaurant around the corner and spent most of our 24 hour stay in the hotel. The breakfast room was crowded and it was hard to get a table, even though we had avoided the posted breakfast time on the one large group's itinerary that was posted in the lobby. Apparently there were several groups at the hotel as well many other travelers; it had been a holiday in the Netherlands two days before our arrival and a "bank holiday" weekend in the UK. Amsterdam is apparently seeing record numbers of tourists this year. We had a drink in the bar before going to dinner--expensive so I understand why the place was deserted. Of course, being jet lagged, it was nice to have a self-service snack area available in the wee hours of the morning where we could get some water. Not as convenient as a mini-bar in the room (we did have an empty refrigerator), but it was something. The bathroom was quite cozy--barely enough room to use the toilet, but you could swing the shower glass partition into the bathtub to give your elbows some space. Stepping up/down to get in and out of the tub was not for the faint of heart though, and a non-slip mat should have been provided. I wonder if they had any handicapped accessible rooms because the room we had was the opposite of that. Luckily I only needed to shower once. When we were picked up from the hotel to go to our ship, I was surprised we were the only guests on the cruise staying in that hotel. Those who had done the 2 night pre-cruise stay seemed much happier with their hotel which was near Centraal station. I would not recommend that AMA Waterways use this hotel in the future.
