Arrived on Saturday 13th May 2023 at the Majestic Hotel in Fira for a four night stay, we were greeted by Karena, who has been more than helpful to us. The location is within walking distance, of the centre of Fira! The Hotel is very Clean, and the staff are very friendly, Breakfast vey nice!! Overall, a great stay in the Majestic Hotel in Fira! I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family. From Room 104.
Family holiday with teens
Just returned from a 5 day break at the Majestic. We are a family of four with one teen and one adult. We were greeted with juice and a face cloth on arrival Additional sightseeing trips and facilities were explained clearly. The staff were all very polite and friendly. We had two different room types - one triple with a caldera view, the other was a maisonette on two levels with a sea view. Both had everything you would need. Good quality toiletries and reasonably priced mini bar, dressing gowns and slippers; along with tea and coffee etc. plus a complimentary bottle of wine. If you don’t mind the traffic noise, I would choose the caldera view rooms. Mainly because of the awesome sunset you can watch from the balcony. The only drawback with the balcony was the lack of privacy - I can appreciate that they’ve been designed to show off the surrounding views to the maximum, but it means that due to the low wall you would be sharing it all with your neighbours. As we went just as the season started, the hotel seemed very quiet. The walls aren’t totally sound proofed so do expect a little noise (but it was minimal). The bar and pool area was really nice and kept meticulously clean. Decent size too, plenty of sun beds and tables. Drinks, snacks at the restaurant were all London type prices. We tried chicken burgers, club sandwiches, some local rose wine and a risotto. All excellent and good value. Breakfast was plentiful and could be taken outside , weather permitting. Staff very polite and attentive. There was an a La carte option - for omelettes and eggs Benedict. All delicious. I had a massage and complimentary facial - both excellent. As the weather wasn’t great we made good use of the 2 games rooms - they had chess and board games in one room and air hockey, pool, table football and darts in the other. My son also enjoyed the well stocked gym. The hotel is very modern and minimalistic - with a sense of tranquility. However, some of the decor and furniture are looking a bit tired. But don’t let that put you off. We were delighted with our choice. Obviously if you want to be closer to the nightlife then you’d need to pick a different place - but for us, it was just what we needed. The walk into town is easy - yes it’s a busy road but it’s a short walk and there are paths - semi lit at night. We can happily recommend the following restaurants: La Scala (gave us an amazing sunset view table and complimentary desserts), Naoussa - great atmosphere and views with very reasonable prices (get there by 7pm to a void the queues) and Volkan on the Rocks was good for brunch. The hotel restaurant - Crocus was also v good. Lucky’s in the main square was good for a cheap, quick bite. The take away ice cream and crepe places were also a hit with us. We used Caldera Boat tours for a 3hr Volcano and hot springs tour. Book ahead as they sell out quickly. It was 25 euros plus the cable car 7 euros each way and 5 euros to enter the volcano site (wear trainers), very rocky and steep in places. When you see more than two cruise ships in the bay, get to the cable car an hour before (at least) as you can’t buy a ticket in advance and we saw a queue of around 300 people the day before our trip. We went to Oia one night. ideally we wanted to get the bus and spend the day there but the weather was stormy and rainy so we opted to take the hotel shuttle bus in the evening. Picks up at 6 and returned us at 9. 30 It was a little hurried to see everything and despite the rain, Oia was really busy. There wasn’t a sunset that night but by around 8.30 the crowds had gone and in the twilight I managed to get some stunning photos. To really appreciate and explore Oia, I’d go all day and stay for the evening sunset. The shopping in Thira is good. Plenty of jewellery, souvenir and ceramic shops. Top tip - If you want to get a good picture of the famous 3 bells of Thira church and blue dome, Walk past it and then turn off the main path and take a sharp right up a gravel path with some houses, walk to the end and follow the signs in land - it’s a 2 minute walk. You’ll find yourself in a car park and at the edge you get the amazing shot. It is sign posted - but really easy to miss…. we walked past Mama Thira, Vanila, irania’s and To briki. All looked great - but didn’t eat there. All in all we had a fantastic time in Santorini and at the Majestic. If I returned I’d come in early summer so that I could enjoy the beaches. I’d also do a wine tour. We tried a couple of different local wines - they were delicious.
Pushing 4 Star
I booked with TUI whose description of the hotel was totally accurate. They made it very clear the hotel was on a main road. During the Coronation weekend in May when I stayed the road had bursts of busy traffic, there was a footpath beside both sides of the road and if you stayed on this road (there is a sign to Fira as you walk along but you will get to Fira just as quickly this way) you reached an excellent supermarket in 7 minutes and the bus station in a further 7 minutes. I found the buses from Fira (the buses start and terminate here for all parts of the island) phenomenal. They were extremely cheap a set fair of between Euros 1.80/Eurus 1.60 (one way) dependent on where you were going and extremely regular. The bus timetable seems to say they are every half hour but when a bus pulls into the bus station it generally goes within 10 minutes of arriving. They took the money as you board the bus and would give change within reason. Back to the hotel, very clean but if (as I did) you didn’t get down to breakfast until 9:45 am (breakfast closes at 10:30 am) there was very little food left and no sign of it being replenished. There was a menu where you could order an omelette, eggs Benedict etc. but the staff never came to your table to ask you whether you wanted this option. They barely acknowledged your existence and raced around clearing the tables. This is beyond words unacceptable. Your holiday should be one of the best days of your life. I can see they are short staffed but it’s not my problem when I am here for a holiday of a lifetime. If you decide to walk from Fira to Oia (the walk starts from the opposite side of the road to the bus station at the Atlantis Hotel) there is no sign for the walk just make sure you stay as high up as you can when you walk, you will eventually see a sign in Firastefani for the walk. If you start in July or August start as soon as it is light, wear trainers and take as much water as you can carry. Sunblock, a tshirt (to cover your shoulders) and trainers are essential. It is definitely not for the feint hearted, lots of steps and some very challenging bits of hiking. It is absolutely worth it but only if you are a very enthusiastic walker. This was indeed the highlight of my trip. Oia is a beautiful place but even at the beginning of May it is absolutely full of tourists. Oia is known for its sunsets but make sure it is a clear night. I had to secure my position at least 2 hours before sunset. Loads of extra buses are put on back to Fira when sunset is reached. If you can’t be bothered to make the journey to Oia the sunset (on a clear night) opposite the hotel is just as good but there in no atmosphere! I would also suggest you visit Akoitiri (the red beach) about 15 minutes walk from the bus stop, Santos Winery (the bus stops right in front) and Kamari (check out The Finch for Brunch) near here the bus will also stop at the Donkey Micro-Brewery. Sadly, I will not be returning to this hotel but will make sure I stay at the Hotel Atlantis!
