An Amazing Hotel - Recommended

Visited in July 2022 with my two teenage daughters. This is a really well laid out, well managed and high quality resort hotel. I’d say the four star plus rating is right, as it is better than the four star hotels we have visited in the past, yet there are a few small things that mean it’s not quite five star.
Points to improve:
Advertise basement rooms at a different, lower rate and don’t allocate to guests paying for the standard rooms.
Improve the quality of the cocktails - use fresh juice and vary the menu included on all inclusive. Maybe have a ‘Cocktail of the Day’ that is included.
Provide fresh juices instead of cordial at breakfast.
Improve the soda quality - the Coke and Sprite tasted like sweetened soda water and weren’t pleasant to drink. (Strangely, the Fanta Lemon was fine).
Provide better shade in the main restaurant to shield the sun and wind to make outside dining more comfortable.
Provide a table service at the snack bar at lunchtimes.
These are only minor niggles however, and overall the hotel is amazing and we had a fantastic holiday here. I never return to the same hotel as there are so many places I’d like to visit, however I would consider coming back to Pelagos in the future.
When we arrived, we were allocated a basement room. It was well located, between two of the pools, but obviously had no view and was quite dark. We requested to change the room and we were told to go to reception the following morning where they would see if they had an alternative available. We did this and were shown a different room which was much better for us. It was on the first floor and the bathroom had two showers which was ideal for a party of three girls! The previous room only had one, so be aware of this if this is important to you. I usually email prior to arriving to make a request, and wish I had done on this occasion as it would have saved having to re-pack and waste our first morning moving rooms. However, once we had moved, we were happy with the room. It was spacious, with sliding doors between the two areas. There were two sinks, as well as two showers. The balcony was spacious with a day bed and a table and chairs. The room was always cleaned thoroughly and a new bottle of water brought each day.
The pools are really lovely. There are three to choose between. The large main pool where the bar and activities are based. We didn’t spend much time here, other than joining in with aqua gym one day, but that is simply due to our preference for a quieter pool. There is a smaller, rectangular pool with a sloping shallow end and deeper end, ideal for smaller children as well as adults. Our room was next to this pool, and we spent quite a few days here. There is no bar or music at this pool, but it’s not far to walk to the main pool bar. The third pool is an adults only one. This had a really good atmosphere, and a bar run by the lovely Natalia, who was so friendly and made the best cocktails. There was music playing here but not too loud and this created a good vibe.
The main buffet restaurant is one of the better all inclusive ones we have been too. There isn’t much indoor seating, and sometimes it was too sunny or windy outside, but you could usually find a table without a wait. The breakfasts were pretty good, with fresh omelettes cooked to order and a good range of cooked food, pastries, fruit, etc. The croissants weren’t great unfortunately, but a minor niggle. Every evening there were different themed nights - Tex-Mex, Italian, Asian, Greek, etc. This added variety to the typical all inclusive buffet, but the salads didn’t change much. There was always pasta with a choice of sauces, fresh meat and fish, as well as the themed dishes. No one could go hungry here! We only ate lunch at the restaurant once, but this was also good.
The a la carte Italian restaurant was really good, a class above others I have been to. There was a menu with lots of choice, and food was served to your table and was hot, fresh and really tasty. They also bring you shots of Limoncello, Ouzo, etc after your meal. We got two visits to this restaurant as part of our ten night stay, but you have to ask to get the second visit.
The snack bar initially struck me as a bit basic, but was actually pretty good and we used this happily most days. The lovely lady who works here always greeted us with a smile and was efficient and friendly. It’s a shame to have to order at the counter and wait for it, rather than sitting at a table, but the food was always served quickly and was of good quality. There isn’t a massive choice, and I imagine during peak season/times there would be a queue. You could get wraps, hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, crepes and ice cream here.
The drinks are mostly ok. There is a good choice of cocktails included in the all inclusive. However, these are not great quality and most taste the same as they are all made with cordial. Spirits are branded, though I’m pretty sure they must be watered down as I never felt any effects and they serve generous measures. Juices at breakfast are cordial and either really weak or really strong. The wine served at mealtimes is drinkable but not great.
As many other reviews have commented upon, the entertainment team here are amazing and really do make a huge difference to peoples’ holiday experience. Dominika is amazing and leads her team of talented staff very efficiently and is instrumental in ensuring activities are enjoyable and entertaining. There is a varied programme of daily activities. I never take part in these activities usually, but felt comfortable to try some here - yoga/stretching and aqua gym. There were other things such as Zumba, football, water polo, etc but I didn’t take part in any of these, although my daughter did take part in water polo on our final day. The evening entertainment programme is mostly run by the in-house team. I had thought this would mean it would be a bit naff, but was actually some of the best entertainment we’ve watched. Dominika is an amazing dancer, as are the others and Lucy is a very talented singer. Even the quiz night, which I usually don’t like, was good fun. On Sundays, a duo play and sing rock songs and again, surprised me by their talent.
The beach across the road isn’t great. We walked across to look at it, but the sea looked pretty rough and it didn’t appeal to us to spend a day here. We managed to book on to a trip to Paradise Beach down in the south of the island. This wasn’t advertised and took some sourcing, but it was lovely to enjoy a day at a nice beach. It was a long way to travel for a short beach day though, and the restaurant was really busy. We should have requested lunch bags from the hotel, which I believe are available.
Other trips we did were a day in Kos town. We went on the local bus, which was very busy and late, but it’s not far to travel. We took the resort train for a tour around the town so we could see the sights, but this had no commentary which would have been helpful. We had a walk around the ruined castle and local shops, and enjoyed gyros and nice ice creams. We did an evening trip to Zia, but decided against doing the Greek night here as the only drink included in the price was wine, which neither of my daughters drink. We had a meal and a walk around the village. Unfortunately the company messed up the numbers on the coach, and we ended up being put on a different coach which dropped off at other resorts and it took hours to get back to the hotel.
The spa at the hotel is nice and we all had a lovely massage at a reasonable price. The facilities - pool, sauna and steam were nice, but not amazing.
We had mixed experiences of the staff at the hotel. As previously mentioned, the entertainment team were fantastic. Natalia was the only bar maid we found to be friendly. Unfortunately some of the staff at the pool bar were very moody and gave the impression you were inconveniencing them by asking for drinks! The staff on reception and guest relations were lovely and friendly. We didn’t use the lobby bar so can’t comment on the staff here. The staff in the restaurant were efficient but not all were that friendly.
There is a small shop on site, which stocks inflatables, snacks, etc. You can buy bus tickets here.
The location of the hotel is ok. It’s only a short journey to Kos town, but there’s nothing much directly around the hotel, and the beach isn’t great.
Overall, this hotel has great facilities and I would highly recommend it to others. You can either enjoy a relaxing break here, or get involved with the activities as you choose.
