Surprisingly fabulous
My family and I visited Gambia for the first time. First time for the family but not for my wife who is from Gambia. We stayed at Senegambia beach hotel which was also a first for my wife. We arrived late at night and got a great reception and ushered to our rooms. The rooms where so roomy and spacious. There's an immediate African touch and feel from the surroundings and the mahogany furniture in the room. The bathrooms are modern with wet room stone tiles which is perfect considering the sandy beach a stones throw from the rooms. Every morning we went for breakfast which became a favourite part if our daily holiday routine. The staff where just exceptional so pleasant and friendly nothing was ever too much for them. On our first day back from breakfast we explored the surrounding grounds of the hotel looking for the beach and we came across a tennis court. Being a tennis fan myself I signed up for a session with the coach (Omar) who was such a wonderful guy. I lost the the first session and since we had a 2 weeks stay I booked a second session a few days later and this time I won. This sent shock waves round the hotel as Omar is no average tennis player and very popular with the guests. We went to the pool which is where I discovered most of the guests are long time guests of this wonderful hotel. Most of the staff kept being greeted with "oh your still here" which on my first opportunity I asked one of them why do people keep saying that to you. Only to find out the guests had been holidaying here on and off for a decade. I wasnt surprised by this having now experienced it for my self. There's a peace and serenity in Gambia you don't find in the first world environment. Did I mention the pool was only separated by a wall from the Atlantic ocean that hugs the whole length of the hotel and several others by the beach. While your at the pool side you can have lunch from an exceptional team while music plays in the background. Lionel Richies album played the afternoon we visited and being a fan of his I could of certainly stayed all night long. After lunch we walked the breath of the beach shoes off, feet deep in the cool water that is softly brushing your worries away. If you want a tan there's beds available with mattresses on the beach or pool side. Police guards patrol the beach and hotels for your safety which is a nice added touch of security. Not that I saw any need really for it as the locals we encountered where so pleasant and friendly. Gambia culture can be felt along the whole senegambia strip which is a street of shops restaurants and hotels where the senegambia beach hotel is located. We loved our stay here and will certainly be back.
ENJOYABLE STAY
We went to the Senegambia Hotel in mid April. As it was near the end of the season the hotel was fairly quiet which suited us as there was always plenty of sunbeds available around the pool and no queues for breakfast. The hotel stands in lovely well kempt gardens. We upgraded our room to deluxe in the Bantaba Block which was well worth it. The room was quite large. Things worth mentioning are that the rooms are very basic but very clean. Our cleaner Ismail SMILEY kept it immaculately clean and smelling great. There was a refrigerator in the room but there was no bottled water provided, not even a bottle for our arrival, no toiletries, no coffee making facilities. However six bottle of water can be bought in a shop just outside the hotel for 157 dalasi. Fortunately we did take our own coffee and managed to get a kettle from reception. The sockets are round two pin. The hair dryer was really good. The room was in a great position near the top pool and just a short walk up a slope to the restaurant. The two pools were lovely and the pool attendant was always around to bring mattresses for the sunbeds. There is a manmade raised sandy area on the edge of the beach with palapas and steps down on to the beach. We did not swim during our stay as the red flag was flying every day. We enjoyed the monkeys who regularly run around the gardens and entertain with their antics. Also the vulture feeding in the gardens at 11:30 every day is interesting to watch. Mark, our Tui rep. was very helpful . He will arrange trips through a Gambian Company. We took one trip through them to Senegal and the Fatala Safari Park. It was a long day and the safari park a bit disappointing . However crossing the Gambia River by ferry with the locals and all their produce was a great experience. If you take this trip do be aware that you need a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter Senegal . Our tour guide Kaile informed us that our certificate was unacceptable and he could “fix it” for 600 dalasi. Unlike some others, we did not pay and our certificates were accepted at the border – just wanted to make you aware! Also take plenty of water. The only drink provided on this trip was a can of drink with your pizza in the safari park. Of course Kaile will hop of the bus and buy water for you at an eye-watering 200 dalasi per bottle. We found a lovely taxi driver at the taxi rank near the hotel. He was so helpful and very honest, watching out for us during our trip. His name is Ismaila Conteh and he drives a green car. We planned our trip with Ismail and he was happy to take us and make recommendations. We wanted to visit the Serekunda Market, Banjul and Tanji fishing village. It was a very interesting trip and we especially enjoyed the fishing village and watching the colourful boats coming in and the locals unloading their catch. Ismail stayed with us the whole time and answered all our questions. We ate outside the hotel in the evenings. As the hotel is on The Strip there are many eateries. Our two favourites were Paradiso and Scala. The food was nice at both but, if you want something a bit more up market but not a lot more expensive go to Scala. It is run by a Danish lady. The garden is lovely, it’s very clean and inside more like an English pub. Finally you need to pay 200 dollars each upon entering the country and again upon leaving. I hope this information will be useful. Enjoy!
Lovely hotel in a good location
Beautiful hotel. The staff are so friendly and approachable. Rooms a bit dated but clean. Food at pool bar was reasonably priced. The grounds are so beautiful and the vulture feeding every day at 11.30 is not to be missed.
