Not so much a landscape as a moonscape, Lanzarote is home to the dramatic Timanfaya National Park where Montaña del Fuego ('Fire Mountain') still steams and hisses beneath the surface. The artist César Manrique was very influential in the development of Lanzarote and today visitors can enjoy magnificent views from the elevated Mirador del Rio towards Graciosa island as well as the underground caves of Jameos del Agua, home to tiny blind white crabs. Costa Teguise is a quiet and relaxing resort. As well as the main sandy beach there are also three smaller coves. Nightlife is fairly quiet with a selection of bars and restaurants. The more active will find the Costa Teguise championship golf course on the outskirts of town and watersports enthusiasts will enjoy Las Cucharas beach. If you are looking for peace and relaxation, you will find it in Playa Blanca situated on the southwest coast of Lanzarote. Once a small and undeveloped fishing village, it now offers sandy beaches and a selection of traditional seafood restaurants and pavement cafes. The small resort centre has a smattering of shops, while a few bars provide entertainment in the evening. Situated within walking distance of the larger resort of Puerto del Carmen, Playa de los Pocillos curls around a large and inviting sandy beach, with views of the spectacular volcanic mountains further to the west. Being quite centrally located on the island, Playa de los Pocillos makes an ideal base for any sightseeing on the island, whilst the livelier resort of Puerto del Carmen is conveniently close.
