Great wintersun break
About the only thing we found that wasn't great was the evening entertainment. The "local" evening was dreadful, and the staff show started well until you got the audience participation. Otherwise we had a lovely time, prices were reasonable bearing in mind you are staying in a "4 star" hotel, especially if you were in happy hour - which lasted quite some time. The food was plentiful, always great choice and enough variety not to be bored for a week. The rooms were adequate, a little tired but not bad. I have seen and read some poor reviews of this hotel, however what I don't think people take into account is the price paid, or the fact that this is a poor country in general and standards are not going to be the same as in other countries. People complained about bed bites, but I have to say I was bitten more by the pool then I was in the room.
I would recommend this hotel for a great break in the sun to recharge the batteries.

Gambia ideal for WInter Sun
This is my 9th year staying at the Laico Atlantic, Banjul Beach. The staff are wonderful and love seeing you return. The location is great and you are guaranteed wall-to-wall sunshine for the week. (I went last week of February) and with a choice of lounging on the beach or staying poolside. The facilities and entertainment are good, but the rooms are beginning to look shoddy and could do with refurbishment. Towels are clean but grey and hard. Bed linen is well worn with ocassional tears. Corridor carpets are worn and stained. The food in terms of quality and variety has much improved this year (Half board). The hotel has also worked hard to keep the levels of mosquitoes inside and in the grounds to a minimum level. I will return next year as I cosider Gambia to be excellent value for money for Winter Sun.

The Hotel is very tired and in need of a refurbishment.
I do not expect to have to tip the driver when doing coach transfers to and from the airport. The bedroom stank of tobacco and there are no non-smoking rooms in the hotel. The dining room at night was full of mosquitos and I ended the first night with over 20 bites on my feet. As with all hotels they ask you to save water by not having your towels replaced every day but still change them every day. The pool and beach area were fine with lots of sunbeds for all the hotel guests. There was a good deal of bird life to watch which as great. The hotel would be better if it was all 'all inclusive' as there was so few of us lunching they could not possible give much choice of food. The all inclusive did not start until 11.00 a.m. which in a hot climate is too late, it should be 10.00.

great base and fantastic staff
Hotel is in the capural away from the main strip of bars abd shops. The staff at the hitel cannot do enough to help you and make your stay fun and relaxing. Food can be repetitive in the buffet but you do have the restaurant if you don't mind waiting. Get out and about to see the real Gambia. If you can afford to tip please dobut it is nit expected

our first time to the Gambia would highly recommend it to all customers, great value for money, could not find any faults with the hotel the only fault was outside the hotel where the locals would follow you everywhere and keep asking for money or to buy them a bag of rice, a very good holiday for first timers.

Great holiday in the Gambia
We are a well travelled couple and whilst the hotel was not quite at the standard we are used to the staff, food and guest more than made up for any shortfalls.
We went out & about with a guide from one of the juice bars. He took us to Monkey & Crocodile Parks - a must; The Market - an experience and the superb Gambian experience of the Slave Trail.
The location was ideal and once we made friends with Badousa we were never bothered by the bumsters.
Definitely recommend and will go again.

Always enjoy my stays here
I have returned here at least 8times I find it easy when travelling on my own as most guests stay in in the evening and I have got to know many of the repeat guests who come every yr like me .I like the food very much and think the staff are fantastic. It's a friendly place.
One huge downside are the incredibly rude and discourteous security staff..rude to me and rude to families and individuals I invite to come in.I am sponsoring a number of Gambians through school and further education , these are not bumsters or undesirables. I have complained so much about this very upsetting behaviour and am coming to the conclusion that the only way forward would be to sack the head of security and all the staff and start again Look at any other hotel inGambia and you will see the difference.it's just appalling.
Security aside , this is a great hotel

excellent value and very respectful staff
The food is great lots of English food for you to eat full English breakfast with you eggs cooked fresh as you order them, cereal and clod cuts with pastries. I went half board and if you want to upgrade while there you can atypical evening meal for me was pork loin mashed spuds and veggies plus cobbler and custard even tho it was 35 degs really enjoyed it there is also local food to try and continental.Hi John and Elaine. Ask for a mozzie net the day you arrive if you have problems. The rooms are always clean and sprayed every night. the entertainment team work very hard and on Wednedays and Saturday the put on a very individual show which is excellent. There are also local bands and tribal dance groups with fashion shows. The pool/beach staff look after you really well too hello James and Natalie. the security guys look after the staff very well and keep anyone away from you if your on the beach Hi all you guys and thank you so much for your kindness, as a single woman these guys looked after me and made sure I felt safe. if you fancy a fresh coconut have a word with Cuba the gardener I am sure he will oblige. I can not fault this place those smiling faces are contagious, people go back here year after year and I know why, the people here have nothing but the 6 month tourist season, but they say as long as they wake up in the morning and the sun is shining what is the problem could we use more yes ofcourse....... The guys in the hotel are very happy to take you on local tours if you want to experience the real Gambia and really make sure you feel very safe. Omar the Thomas Cook rep is really is under employed here is only here for the 6 month season this guys is a good promotion for you guys, he's available 6 days a week with a contact number if you need him. Go there guys its only 6 hours from home and early season is when you get ur bargain if ur watchin ur cash I recommend it if you want to surrounded by smiling respectful people and nice hot 30 degree+ weather in cold cold winter months.
