Holidays Kefalonia

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Cephalonia is an oasis of spectacular scenery. One of the greenest islands, the rocky terrain is blanketed in forests of Fir trees, extensive olive groves and vineyards. The precipitous cliffs shelter secluded mountain coves and narrow lanes criss-cross through the mountains past sleepy villages, churches and monasteries.

Said to be home to the tomb of Odysseus, the island is rich with legend, myths and historical sites, including the Venetian Citadel in the picturesque Assos and the monastery of St. Gerasimus. The rugged landscape also hides some fantastic natural phenomena, such as the Cave of Drongorati or the underground lake at Mellisani, while the imposing rock of Ainos, home to wild horses, offers gorgeous panoramic views.

From pebbles to powdery sand, rocky coves to long sandy stretches, secluded escapes to busy shores full of water-sports and beach-bars, Cephalonia has some beautiful beaches, each unique. The popular resort of Lassi features two of the most popular sandy beaches – Makrys Gialos and Platys Gialos, while Myrtos, the best known beach on the island that is often described as “a little piece of heaven”, is found just north of Argostoli.

Though not a party island, the capital Argostoli and the larger resorts, such as Sami, Skala, Lixouri and Poros, bubble with energy and evenings out can be as lively or relaxed as you like. Breathtakingly beautiful, atmospheric and charming, Cephalonia is the treasure of the Ionian Islands.
