Known locally as the pearl of the Sahel - the city of Sousse is the product of centuries of culture which is large enough to be exciting, yet small enough to explore on foot. This compact resort with its adjoining strip of modern hotels brings together beautiful beaches surrounded by living history. The narrow alleyways of the medina conceal stalls selling fresh market produce, crafts and leather goods. The busy Avenue of Habib Bourgiba is brimming with shops and cafes where tourists mingle with the locals as they go about their everyday life. There is also a large gift store that is haggle free for those who prefer to browse. Beyond the working port visit the museum and the Great Mosque. A ride in one of the many horse drawn carriages draped in floral garlands is an enchanting way of circling the city. Nightlife is low key, but the inexpensive seafood restaurants and cafes lining the main street of Place Farhat Hached are a perfect spot to round off a full day. This city has retained most of its original charm and would make a weekend city break with a distinctly Arabian flavour.
