If you're thinking of family holidays in Tunisia resorts, then Mahdia with its modern hotel complexes and splendid, unspoilt beaches fringing turquoise seas would make a safe choice. However a wander through the old town will reveal the essence of Tunisian culture. In centuries past, the 10 metre thick walls encircling this ancient capital provided sea-going marauders with a daunting challenging but today lure tourists into the heart of Mahdian life. Cafes set in shady squares offer relief from the midday sun and the hubbub of the massive medina where a quick browse often turns into a 2 hour adventure. Take a stroll into Mahdia's busy little fishing port where you can see octopus sold by the bunch, having been caught by local youths. It would be difficult to miss the huge 16th century fort "Borj El Kassar" which affords views of the city and the sea and at the edge of the peninsula, the lighthouse and sailors graveyard facing the sea hint at the part played by the sea in shaping this intriguing mini-city.
