  • Overview

Tunisia is one of Africa's most popular holiday destinations and with good cause. There is something for everyone – whether it is sailing, diving, windsurfing, golfing or just soaking up the sun on one of its glorious Mediterranean beaches. When you feel like a spot of culture, you can visit the remains of legendary cities dating back thousands of years. When you're in the mood for an adventure you can take a trip to the desert with its dramatic dunes and romantic oases. And what could be more fun than to lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of a colourful souk or medina?

The Tunisian year is marked by several important religious festivals. One of the most significant is Ramadan in November, and when the fasting breaks, there is a great deal of celebration. Throughout the year there are also numerous secular festivals. Even the smallest villages make time to celebrate and visitors are always welcome to join in the fun.

Trees and flowers are the theme for two of the year's early celebrations – Kaala-Kebira's Olive Tree Festival in February and Nabeul's Orange Blossom Festival in April. April is also when Berber tribesman from all over southern Tunisia arrive in Tatouine to take part in the Ksar Festival, a five-day event involving a variety of activities such as equestrian games, camel races, and representations of Berber weddings.

Autumn is marked by the biennial Carthage International Film Festival, which takes place in October in odd-numbered years. The end of the year sees parades of decorated floats, folklore and camel racing at the Festival of the Tozeur Oasis followed by the Sahara Festival near Douz, which involves more folklore, camel racing, cavalry and music.

Tunisia holidays offer everything from relaxation on powder-soft beaches and journeys across the Sahara Desert to scuba diving on the Mediterranean coast and exploring ancient Roman ruins. Behind excellent beaches and low-rise hotels lies a country of great variety. Green mountains, rivers and lakes dominate the north, while the south is ruled by the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert – powerful scenery broken only by sporadic oases.

Concealed in the country's interior are caves, gorges, waterfalls and lakes to explore. Let your senses run riot in Tunisia amongst the sights and sounds of the walled medina in Hammamet, or in the capital Tunis where you can barter for traditional Berber carpets and experience the exotic echoes of the muezzin call to prayer. This is one of the most sophisticated Arab capitals, the French colonial influence still apparent in its wide boulevards and shopping malls. Tunis' old medina is the main tourist attraction; in this 13th century walled city you will find the souks in narrow alleyways around the central Zitouna Mosque.

With its modern hotel complexes and splendid unspoilt beaches and turquoise seas, package holidays to Mahdia are a popular option amongst families. Sousse combines the hustle and bustle of city life with stunning beaches and historic sights. Skanes holidays are ideal for those who want a long golden sandy beach and stylish hotels.

Cheap holidays to Tunisia

Tunisia holidays represent great value for money and there are usually plenty of late deals and cheap offers available. As the market leader we have the widest range of Tunisia holidays available, including tours and desert safaris in the Sahara, twin centres and beach stays. There is a superb choice of hotels from small, charming and family run to large hotel complexes featuring spas and oceanfront locations on an all inclusive basis.

Because there's so much to do and the weather is constantly good, Tunisia is great for long stays, with some people opting to spend four, five or six weeks here. Tunisia is also very convenient as you can fly from 11 regional airports in the UK. Out and about there are plenty of things to do in Tunisia other than relaxing on the beach. Popular activities include camel rides in the Sahara desert and Arabian nights of belly dancing, horsemanship and an incredible Fakir show that's not to be missed. Golfers will love Tunisia's championship golf courses where the greens are challenging but the fees are not. Tunisia is also home to many of the sights of the Roman Empire, and a visit to the Roman colosseum at El Djem is a memorable experience. From beautiful beaches to ancient history, Tunisia has much to offer. To find out more watch Tunisia videos or read Tunisia holiday reviews.
