The USA spans multiple climate zones, so temperatures and weather conditions can vary hugely depending on where you travel. Expect anything from familiar mild conditions to intense heat, humidity or cooler winters, sometimes within the same season.

Best time to visit USA

March to May and September to November bring comfortable, often sunny weather in many popular cities and road‑trip spots, with fewer crowds than peak summer.

Summer (June to August) is hottest nationwide, great for beaches and theme parks, but you can expect humidity in the south and busy attractions.

FAQs

Do I need to apply for a visa to visit the USA?

Most British nationals can apply for an ESTA through the Visa Waiver Programme. If your application is rejected you’ll need to apply for a full visa.

You may be ineligible for ESTA if you plan to stay over 90 days, have a criminal record, have visited certain war zones or have visited Cuba since January 2021.

Who can apply for an ESTA through the Visa Waiver Programme?

British nationals can usually apply for an ESTA, allowing you to enter the USA without needing a full visa. We recommend you use the official US government website or app to apply. The current price (as of February 2026) is $40.27.

You will normally get a response within a couple of hours, but it can take up to three days. If your application is rejected or your ESTA is revoked then you will need to apply for a full visa.
Need to renew your passport? Do this first, and apply for ESTA once it arrives.

Do I need to provide my social media handles if travelling to the USA?

As of February 2026 there is a section on ESTA to share your social media handles. The question is optional, but it may be a good idea to fill this in if you happen to have the same name as a public figure.

What is the norm for tipping in the USA?

In the USA tipping is considered the norm.

Typical tipping amounts are:

Hotel porter - $1 per bag
Bartender - $1 for a standard drink or 20% for a cocktail
Taxi driver - 20%
Chain fast food outlets - no tip
Independent fast food outlets - 10%
Restaurant server - 20% (unless the bill reads ‘gratuity included’)
Hairdresser or beauty therapist - 20%

For exceptional service you may want to tip more. In a restaurant leaving no tip, without providing negative feedback on your experience would be considered very unusual.
