Get a feel for the resort

Compile a list of all the things you look for on a hassle-free holiday and it's unlikely the mega-resort of Playa Dorada, five kms from the city of Puerto Plata, has forgotten anything. It's not just the beach that sets Playa Dorada (Spanish for 'Golden Coast') apart, although the two-kilometre stretch of powdery sands are particularly fine. The resort is largely the province of 'all inclusive' complexes, offering a round-the-clock smorgasbord of fine food, thrilling water sports and colourful evening entertainment. There are shops galore lining the streets - even a shopping mall, selling internationally branded fashions and electrical goods. Keeping you spoiled for choice, Playa also features a cinema, two casinos, tennis clubs, horseback riding areas, and the Robert Trent Jones - designed 18 hole Playa Dorada Golf Course. Developers around here make it awfully difficult for you to leave the area - which, of course, would be a great shame. The mountains of central Dominican Republic are within easy striking distance and, further along the coast, you'll find wilder stretches of shore where you can enjoy a day's beachcombing followed by a Cuba Libra at a thatched beach bar. The north coast is, essentially, a continuous strip of pristine sands, palm fringed and sun warmed, although some beaches are better than others, the Playa Dorada strip is among the best.
