Jewish District
On your trip to Krakow make sure you explore the Jewish District, Kazimierz. Once home to thousands of Polish Jews, it’s had a difficult history over the centuries, but has come out the other side as one of the most quirky and trendy places in all of Krakow.
When you arrive at the Jewish District, find out all about the history of the area, including how its peaceful 500 year history was sadly destroyed during the Second World War. During the Communist era it was heavily neglected, but now it’s one of the most vibrant and exciting areas of the city. You may also recognise it as the backdrop for the Spielberg film Schindler’s List.
Walking through Kazimierz you’ll see art galleries, antique shops and quirky cafes alongside synagogues, historical buildings and Jewish cemeteries. If you’re visiting Krakow during the summer, you may be lucky enough to attend the Jewish Culture Festival, which is a brilliant celebration and one of the biggest parties of the year.
Whichever season you visit in, make sure you go and explore the Old Jewish Cemetery at Remah Synagogue. After wandering the narrow streets and old courtyards, go for a coffee in a locally-run café and listen to some traditional klezmer music. There’s a flea market on Sundays, and during the evenings the area comes alive with bars and restaurants, especially in the old square, Plac Nowy. Go to Czajownia for tea, shisha and vegetarian food, or Bagelmama to taste traditional Jewish bagels served with fresh orange juice.
