The Pestana Blue Alvor is the first all-inclusive 5-star hotel built from scratch for families in the Algarve, Portugal. I stayed here with my work family and it has made me want to come back again for a second visit with my proper family, as it was that good.
When we first arrived at the hotel we were told to park right up close to reception and to leave our bags in the car as our rooms were a little way away from the reception building. Upon entering we were greeted by extremely friendly staff and a freshly made 'Portugese Almond' cocktail which was a great first impression. Everyone was so excited for us to be here and the buzz of the place was excellent and nothing was too much hassle for the staff.
We checked in and got given our room keys and maps of the hotel grounds. The hotel has 12 Villas, of which contain different styles and standards of rooms. We got told we were staying in 'Villa 4'. We then handed over our bags to the baggage porter who quickly took our bags to our rooms whilst we parked our car in the main car park.
I must also add in these 'COVID-19' times , all staff ALWAYS wore a mask and kept there distance. With screens up between you and the receptionist's and hand sanitiser everywhere you felt extremely safe.
Upon entering my room my bag was already laid out on my bed waiting for me and the mini fridge was stocked with some complimentary welcome drinks and some local snacks.
The rooms themselves were absolutely huge, in an open planned format. With curtains to segregate the bedroom area to the hallway/bathroom. All the amenities that you would require were included too including a fridge, safe, hairdryer, large TV and power sockets everywhere.
The bed was king sized and very comfortable with a nice and fluffy duvet and pillows, making for a great sleep every night.
The bathroom had a massive walk in power shower which was amazing which also contained some local toiletries to use, which were topped up when they ran out also. Everything about the room was extremely clean, however during the night time there was awful sewer smell that came from the bathroom pipes, also others that I were staying with in the same 'villa' complained of the smell. Its possible that the drainage may not work as well on the second floor, but I am unsure?
Every room also comes complete with a generously sized balcony with furniture and smoking facilities (should anyone in your party smoke). As my room was at the back of the villa the balcony lacked direct sun as it was always blocked by the villa itself, but this wasn't too much of a problem as being blonde, I burn easily.
The whole hotel was covered with free Wi-Fi which meant streaming and catching up with loved ones back at home was made that bit easier. I ran a speed test on it a few times and was consistently getting 300mb even with the hotel getting fuller and fuller - which is a lot more than I get on my fibre connection back at home.
The hotel grounds themselves are absolutely massive and kept extremely tidy and neat. In order to maintain air quality and reduce pollution, only electric vehicles can circulate inside the resort which I thought was a nice touch.
There are 3 big pools located in the hotel as well , I went in once but it was a bit cold. That's probably the issue with coming in October as they are not heated.
I read that the hotel itself is the size of 12 football pitches. Talking about football the hotel has a really nice artificial 5 a side pitch for use for free and a paddle tennis court and beach volleyball area. Perfect after a day at work with friends to relax and play games.
The food is all inclusive and the main restaurant had a great range and selection of choices every morning and night. I can't comment on lunch time food as we were at work everyday so we missed it. There were selections to cater for all food allergies and requirements and you could have as much or as little as you wanted, all cooked and prepared to a great standard.
We had in place a 2 alcoholic drink per person/per night format, which I'm sure is what was the agreed deal with our work, but I think in the summer time during peak season everything including drinks is all inclusive. The bar had a great selection of local and imported drinks, and the staff kept our drinks refilled as soon as we could finish them.
I only have one negative point about this hotel - when I put my laundry in it was returned to me the very next day which was good, however they returned it at 11:30PM, when I was already sleep. They just walked into my room which was a bit of a rude awakening. Nevertheless they may of thought I needed it for the next day and it may just be me being pedantic , but I thought this was late for a laundry drop off and they should of waited for the next day.
The beach is only a short 7 minute walk from the hotel, of which they have made it easier with a designated 'Pestana' boardwalk taking you right down to the sea front. I would recommend going down here during the day and at night, as the scenery as you can see below is absolutely breath taking.
Overall I was extremely satisfied with my stay here and all of the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I can not wait to come back here and hopefully do a bit more exploring in Portugal.
I have made several visits to Pestana Hotels on the Algarve in the past 5 years making my reservations directly with the hotel group and on several occasions have had to complain. Up to last week I have had two reservations pending- Pestana Blue Alvor (April Stay) and Pestana Alvor Praia (Sept Stay). For Pestana Blue Alvor I had free cancellation upto 18 March (in fact Pestana website stated cancellation upto 15 April). Due to Covid 19 on 18 March I followed the directions to cancel on line, however website stated it couldnt be cancelled. I sent a contact request through the Website, but heard nothing in 48 hrs. Although I could have amended my flights to a date later in the year, intending to avoid the hotel extortionate cancellations fees I decided the best way forward was not to cancel my travel plans. Days later Pestana emailed me they were going to transfer my all inclusive booking to Alvor Praia (where bars/restaurants,pool and spa would be closed -food and drink would be a carry out service). I decided to check what flight alternatives existed for a later date (but with a break coming in September my options were limited). If Pestana website had allowed my earlier request to cancel there would have been more options. I was in the process of contacted the hotel to ask for recompense due to website failure to allow my earlier request to cancel when I received another Pestana email to say my reservation had been cancelled due to State of emergency. This would have been fine if they had of allowed my cancellation earlier when I had leeway to change my flights , but was now too late. I contacted Pestana for recompense which they refused. I have now cancelled my Sept stay with Pestana and I am seeking advice on the way forward
I have read the reviews but we went anyway, and had the family time of our life.
Grounds have evident growing pains, because we went late in season the pools was not that warm actualĺy the sea was warmer so we went to the lovely beach, reception not great help on trying to book excursions but we found great tour shop 10 minutes away and finally no coffee machine in room.
There was freebies in the fridge of our room, food was overall great and have to say loved the local vendors in the restaurant showing off local culture as that's what we love. If I wanted a english breakfast I would stay home. Entertainers great although I do think KIDS CLUB NEED DIFFERANT ENTERTAINERS. Accommodation beautiful and for me the ninjas was the heroes (house keeping) room was always clean turn down service and you could tell they where working round the clock to keep the resort clean.
If I could say three thing
I know its end of season but the show must go on as things was not kept to schedule and I hate not going to schedule.
If the adults are allowed a heated pool then the kids should at least have a way to warm up in the lower season
And for god sake put coffee machines in the room, or atleast invest in better on resort
