Porto Antigo is a beachfront hotel in Santa Maria, a resort town at the southern end of the tropical island of Sal in the Republic of Cape Verde. Although the island itself is tiny, stretching only 30km from north to south, its extraordinary salt flats have been an important trade and tourist destination for decades. This whitewashed, red-roofed hotel sits on the sandy beach of Santa Maria, near a historic fishing port. The hotel has two pools one of which sits beside the ocean, with wide stone steps leading down from the pool and onto the sand. The semi-private beach itself is protected by a curved wall, giving the feeling of a secret tropical cove. You can enjoy views of this unusual feature from the hotel restaurant, which sits on the broadest part of the wall and stretches out into the water. When not sipping drinks on the sand or exploring the Santa Maria resort, you might like to enjoy a little island exploration. As Sal is quite small, most parts of it are easy to reach. A popular destination is the secret salt lake of Pedra de Lume, hidden inside the crater of an extinct volcano in the North of the island.
Sal is one of a handful of scattered islands that make up the Republic of Cape Verde, an archipelago some miles off Africa's North western Coast. It's the most developed of the islands, and although much of it is flat and dry, Santa Maria is an oasis-style resort town with palm trees lining the beach and avenues. North of Santa Maria are its famous salt pans; to the south lie the tropical open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. You may want to go island hopping around the other islands of Cape Verde by local ferry service from the port of Palmeira, on the West coast of Sal.
The hotel restaurant is open for a breakfast buffet in the morning and serves an a la carte dinner menu in the evening. You can eat inside or on the shaded terrace of the restaurant. Those wanting to cook for themselves will find ingredients in the shops in Santa Maria.
In Santa Maria you can watch surfers, go quad biking on the salt flats or board a ferry for a spot of Cabo Verde island hopping.
Two nice pool areas, one for each hotel building. Both have pool and deck with sun loungers and beautiful sea views. The hotel offers its guests free beach chairs on the beach.
Apartments and villas at Porto Antigo are simple and classic in style. Apartments have kitchenettes with basic kitchen equipment and fridges with freezers for Self Catering.

Awesome place by the beach... I loved the fact that it was so close to the sea.. the balcony facing the sea was good. These apartments do not have Wi-Fi however and didn't offer daily cleaning unless paying extra... they have their own pool as well.
We stayed one week in Porto Antigo. The hotel booked by Ving travelagency. When we came there, we were welcomed by a nice lady in the reception. We got discount-cupongs, voucher for the breakfast and information about the pooltowels etc.
Two guys help us with the luggage and followed us to the room. We walked a far bit from reception. There was other buildings between. We ended at Porto Antigo 2. Then they asked us for the roomnumber. "I don't know". They asked with number we had on the key. "we haven't got any key". So no-one got the key. One guy went for picking them up from reception.
When he came back they opened up and said that the cleaner has been there cleaning but not had time to make the bed yet and the towels comes later.
Our children was going to slerp in the bedcoach but that was not fixed either.
The guy helped the cleaninglady to fix the coach before he went.
Okey, this was not really what we expected but "ok, we are only going to sleep here.. We will manage that"
This was room 54 and our travelcompany was living in ap 52.
The safetybox was closed and there was no code to open it, not either in our travelcompanys room. We went to the reception, far away to get help. One of the guys came to help us, first in ap 52.He opened with key and showed us how to use it. Then he opened in ap 54,but never tried it there. Then he went.
When we were going to fix the code, it was not workning. Several buttons was not working at all. Once again going to the reception. They will send someone. Noone came, we went out for dinner. Nothing was fixed when we came back, we asked in the reception next morning. The guy came again and noticed that it was broken. "I will call technican". We were waiting and waiting, nothing happened. Again we went to the reception for help. THEN she called the technican. We were waiting again.. At last he came, he tog the door of the safetybox with him and left. This time we asked if we had to wait. So since he said it was ok we finally could go down to the pool. This is 1,5 days after arrival. We had to asked in the reception for a cushion and quilt to one of the children because they only left one. Later we get to know that they had mixed up our rooms also.
And top of that they made us feel like we did not understand anything. The only one who was nice in the reception was the lady when we arrived and a young guy.
The poolarea is ok, the beach is near directly down from the poolarea. There was most of the time no problem to get a sunbed. So the surroundings in the hotel was good.
The breakfast is very small but enough for us. There is bread, ham, cheese, juice, tea, coffee, fruits. There is a chef frying eggs, omelett or pancakes on order. There are cakes, pizza, bisquits and some warm food like scrambled eggs, catchupa, vedgetables..
Nothing if you like a big breakfastbuffet. The waiters was pretty "snorky", but the kitchenstaff was nice.
In the room was an old coach, where the children was sleeping. It was broken, but they did not care.
The tv has so dark picture that you could not look at tv at all. We told them about this, but nothinh happened. If you want waterboiler, coffeemaker or something like that you have to ask in the reception. If they have some free you get one, but you can't be sure. The pooltowels you pick from the reception against deposit. But you can change it everyday.
In the shower was a lot of black moulds dots. This we told the travelagency when they was by the reception, but did not care.
Small ants and some cockroaches in the toilet. There was a very strange door to the toilet.
You got small soaps in and some bags of showercream in the bathroom. We had to buy from the store.
We had a gasstove but no oven, in rolm 52 there was an oven.
No dishbrush or soap for thst, but the cleaner made the dishes. The balcony was ok.
I can not recommend this hotel, we ate dissapointed. It looks not at all like the pictures of the room in our travel agencys website.
The whole Residence is pretty nice, beautiful small Bungalows and Apartments, very well located. We had a great stay for hardly one week. The Handover for the keys was easy, the communication with the Host very good. The Apartment had everything we needed for our stay. The only negative thing to say about the place is that the bedroom was right under the roof, just with a small window above. There was hardly no air coming inside which made it impossible for us to find a good sleep (it was simply way too hot). And unfortunately the WiFi didn’t work so I just got a local phone card to use Internet. Though, we would book Porto Antigo Residence anytime again!
